I would like to replace my 2004 XC90 D5 SE (82,000 miles FVSH). Despite the 4-wheel-drive failing (repaired under warranty by Warranty Direct - thanks for your recommendation) the car has been a great buy. I am considering replacing it with another XC90 soon – probably a 2008 model. My job has changed recently and I commute by train daily. The car is in the garage all week and only comes out for occasional day trips at weekends and periodic long motorway journeys (family lives up North) during school holidays - so 10,000 miles maximum per annum. If I were to fault my current XC90 it would be the gruff and sluggish performance of the D5 engine. So I'm considering the 3.2 six cylinder or even the 4.4 V8. Not withstanding the extra £200 per year in road tax, would a petrol make sense - or is the D5 a no-brainer? What can I expect to get for my current car and what should I look to pay for your recommended replacement?

For resale, the D5 is a no brainer. That's where the demand is. But for purchase you will get the straight six much cheaper for the same reason, assuming you can find one. I'd worry a bit about the V8 because it has been fitted to so few vehicles that parts and even servicing might be difficult.
