Which single car could I replace my Renault Avantime and Fiat Punto with?

I have a Renault Avantime V6 and a Punto 1.1. I need to switch to just one car. I'm thinking about a Golf but which model? Or do you have an alternative suggestion? A car in between the two extremes would be good. We do a mixture of long and short journeys, hence the two cars at present. We have a possible budget of £20,000.

The Avantime is a weirdo classic and should now be starting to appreciate. Don't simply part exchange it, as it may be worth more than you think. The best sub-GTI Golfs are 1.4TSI 122s or 1.2TSI 105s. But there are other possibilities, such as a Mazda 3, a Ford C-Max or a new model Ford Focus.
