Am I getting a fair offer?

I have already tried to part exchange my 56 plate A4 Avant 2.0 TSFI with 48,000 miles on the clock, good condition, FASH, full MoT, New Cam Belt etc, against a nearly new S-Max, but was offered £6,200 against a WhatCar rough valuation of about £8000.

How can these figures be so far apart? What is a realistic figure I should expect, and would I be better selling through Sure-Sell, which I know you recommend?

Plus, I do like the S-Max but am concerned as a private buyer about residuals. I intend to spend about £19 - £20,000 including the value of Audi. Is there anything else I should consider? My main needs are: 5 possibly 7 seats, flat load floor, economical to run, higher driving position, manual, preferably not an electronic hand brake, good residuals.

I have also considered Volvo XC60, Hyundai Santa Fe, and a Discovery. I would do about 10-12,000 miles a year.

Glass's trade for a 2006/56 2.0TFSI SE with 54k miles is £6,600. Real life values can dip at this time of year, so £6,200 was about right. These is a tiny chance that you might be about to get £8k selling privately, but I very much doubt it. Maybe £7k if you are lucky enough to find the right punter. The S-Max is the best car of its type because it combines excellent handling and ride quality with 7 seats. The Toyota Verso 1.8i Valvematic is more staid, but okay. Renault now does an excellent 1.4T 140PS petrol engine and a 1.6 DCI 130 diesel engine in the Grand Scenic. Yes, you could consider a used 2010-2011 model Hyundai Santa Fe with the 2.2 R Type engine.
