What car should I hire in the USA?

I am planning a three-week trip to the States next spring and I am in a quandry about whether to go for a convertible (the ideal), a standard car or even some type of RV.

There will be three adults and one child of eight, and we'll be driving from Monument Valley to LA and ending up in San Francisco. Can you help?

You'll get blown about and burned in the convertible with the top down, and you'll be more vulnerable to attack, but it will be more fun and will make it a holiday you'll remember. Also much better for taking photos of spectacular scenery from.
