Considering a new Passat estate. What's your view on the 1.6 diesel engine in this car?

I was about to but a Mondeo estate, following your recommendation but have now seen the new Passat. The economy of the 1.6TDi is attractive but what's your view on the engine in a car this size please?

The 1.6 TDI in the Passat returns a good claimed economy figure (the Bluemotion model does a claimed 64.2mpg), but it's not the choice if you want performance with 105bhp. That said, it's more than adequate and is ideal for motorway driving as it pulls well in gear once on the move. But if you're going to be regularly carrying more than on passenger and luggage, it may be worth it getting something with more poke. The Mondeo remains one of the best estates around and the 2.0 TDCi engine performs well.
