Quick one

I have had a good look around for cars now for over a month and I am looking at spending £4 - £6k on a second-hand car. I would like something with a bit of a kick to it, and medium size. I am heavily leaning toward an Octavia RS. I can pick one up with less than 80,000 miles, around an 03 plate for around £5k. The other thought was an RX8. Not as practical but faster and more fun to drive, I would imagine. Not so sure about the engine though. Do they last? Would you think the Octavia RS is a good choice or would you recommend something better for the same price range and performance?

I rate the Leon 20VT Sport or Cupra as better. Has a stronger, twin shaft 6-speed gearbox. The Octavia VRS 5-speed gives out in time. But at 80k miles the engine will need a new timing belt, tensioner, waterpump and cam-to-cam chain. The RX-8 could be a risk unless you have a really good specialist locally.
