Giving it lurch

1st June saw the re- opening of the Honda factory at Swindon, and if
the press are to be believed they are pinning great hopes on the production of the new Jazz. Now my wife has owned two of the old shape 1.4 CVT models from new, and while we agreed with your almost weekly endorsement of them, felt that it would benefit from a little more zip off the line, and a little better ride. When just this was promised with the launch of the new model we trotted round to the local agent for a test of the new I-drive model. To our horror the car went off with what can only be described as a series of lurches as it changed gear. The salesman helpfully suggested that "you will get used to it. It is a new way of driving!" I still don't know how this new gearbox, described as having an "automatic manual clutch" works. I fear that there is much modification needed if this is to work and would appreciate your comments on the best auto alternative. I notice there are not many of the new models about and that you seem to have switched your favours to Hyundai.

Most drivers learn to get on with an automated clutch. You just have to remember it is not a 'press and go' automatic. Alternatives with a proper 4-speed torque converter auto are the Nissan Note 1.6 petrol and the KIA Soul 1.6 diesel. Honda could have fitted its 5-speed torque converter automatic to the new Jazz, as it does in other markets, but chose not to. Test of that drivetrain in the Jazz based Honda City at: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=363
