Ford Fiesta Saloon 1.4 2003 plate - Heated screen will not turn off - moretonjeremy

Has anybody ever had this problem? Garage says a new GEM required at £250 plus fitting. Switch is not the problem but screen stays on even though switch is off. Could it be a relay rather than the GEM?

Obviously, you need to disable the screen element by taking its fuse out. The screen takes a lot of current - at tickover you can hear the revs drop when you switch the screen on! If its left on it'll cost in fuel. But do you mean that it's not switching off automatically, but you can still push the switch to switch it off? if you can switch it off with the switch, then the relay is ok and the timer is faulty. My thoughts would be to accept that that's the case and just remember to switch it off once the screen has cleared. (like we used to have to do on older cars!).

Didn't read it properly! - "Screen stays on when switch is off".

On a car with simple, understandable electrics, that would indicate a sticking relay, but modern cars aren't simple, which is why they cost so much more than they need to! If the screen stays off after the ignition key is switched off and back on again, that rules out the relay, because the relay is dropping off when the ignition is switched off, and until the ignition is switched off, a condition from the ridiculously over-complex electronics is keeping it energised.
