Just seen my first Range Rover Evoque on the road

They're smaller than you might think. Seem to be have been based on those Spectrum Patrol Cars in Captain Scarlett.

Certainly noticeable and a bit different - if you can live with rear side and back windows which are not as deep as a letterbox.

A spectacular triumph of style over reality.

I probably won't bother getting one

I first saw one in white, 5 doors, about 3 weeks ago. JLR are doing a great job of linking the designs of Jaguar/Range Rover models in the range with one another while making them distinct from one another. Audi, please take note. You've started to subscribe to the Russian doll design tachnique. IMO this is getting very boring and appears to show a lack of design flair and imagination.

Yet to see an Evoque, but Jag have started the Russian Doll techinque with the facelifted XF

I've seen two A8s recently - for an £80k+ car they look just like a £25k A4.

Looks like an elongated Nissan Juke.

...And probably about as useful offroad.

There isn't an ugly one in the range. Why deviate from an elegant, successful style that ages gracefully.? No pillbox style windows, no jarring discontinuities in the lines. Yes please!

No thanks to the Citroen DS3, Skoda Yeti, BMW 5 series GT. All sad attempts to be 'different' without actually being mechanically innovative.

DS3 reminds me of a beaver.

Maybe not ugly, just plain dull and repetitive styling. Must be a boring job working as a car designer at Audi. How should I design the new Q3? Easy, just shrink a Q5. With the A6 just upsize an A4, tweak the front so it looks as though we've thought about it and re-style the interior, job done.

Perhaps, but British Leyland decided that the conventional, round steering wheel was dull and repititive, so decided that the Austin Allegro would benefit from a square one. It quickly became apparent why everyone else used a plain round one. It's pointless to waste time and effort trying to find solutions to problems that don't exist. I still think engineering effort should be centred around improving genuine design shortcomings rather than styling oddities. I'd ather walk out to see an Audi A6 on the drive than a Citroen C1 for example. 'Funky' styling grows old fast.

But the fact is some funky looks and some chrome can sell well and sell fast as customers keep hunting for "something different".

Alot of so called 4x4's these days are nothing more than tall hatchbacks for 20% more money, i know this, you know this, the people that buy them know this, but they still sell! And so long as they continue to do so, car makers will keep making them.

The Nissan Qashqai outsold the Ford Mondeo last year. Go figure.
