205 engine change - rozza
My parents bought me a 1987 pug 205XS 1.4 (with the lent-back engine). I have had numerous problems with it overheating and finally the head gasket has gone. I have been quoted between 3 and £400 to get it replaced and the cylinder head skimmed and preassure tested with no guarentee that it won't happen again in a few months time. Is it possible to put a newer upright engine in it on the same engine mounts or would a lot of welding need to be done? Would it be worth my while getting a new engine for it at all or should I just cut my losses and get rid of it?

Hi Rozza - A further £400 is a lot of money to spend out on a '87 Pug 205 that has been giving you overheating trouble. For little more than that amount, my daughter would sell you her '88 205GRD that's in excellent nick and with a new MOT.

It would be a lot of work to fit a later type engine. A better bet if the car is otherwise good would be to contact a specialist Peugeot breaker and see about a 'new' engine. The engine has to come out to change the gasket anyway, so you'll only be in for the extra cost of the engine (which will probably match the labour cost for the head!). Make sure you check the radiator and all the hoses whilst it's out!

Thanks for the offer John but I would rather stick with a petrol engine at the moment. However, I am looking into reconditioned engines as well as breakers yards. I would quite like to keep the car as it is in very good condition as I have spent a lot of money on it and it is a dream to drive. Thanks anyway

my 205 also over heats a lot, its a 1.1 petrol, i get a lot of rust back through to the expansion bottle, which leads me to think haed gasket is going/gone yet the oil cap looks fine and the car drives fine.

It got to the stage where it was overheating at 40MPH in 5th gear :(

I flushed the radiater (i do this at least once every two weeks) and its fine, what is going on with the cars cooling system?

I assume after you've flushed the radiator, you add antifreeze when you refil? No good just adding water as the engine will just corrode again. Could it be that this rust in the system has somehow jammed the thermostat shut, thus making your car overheat?
Have you tried changing the thermostat?
Have you tried back flushing the cooling system?
Have you tried adding a flushing agent to clean the system?

sadly i have done all that, i have changed the thermostat, the old one HAD jammed, tryed back flushing the engine and added flushing agent

big problem

Does it still overheat if you leave the thermostat out?

dont know, would have though that was a bad idea, it would coll the eninge when its cold anyway....

It would prove whether the thermostat was working or not! The new one you fitted may be equally as faulty as the old one.

You mention it keeps overheating - are you losing any coolant. How many miles do you drive, or how long do you leave the engine running before it overheats?

it depends, i do have a leak out of the radiator sump, i ahve tried to fix it, but it still leaks slightly, as for time, it could take 200 miles of hard driving or 10 miles of gentle drving, its almost random,

My 205 1.4 had a complete cooling system flush last year, but less than a year later the garage doing the MoT managed to burst the top hose, apparently because the long pipe to the overflow tank was blocked. Can't say that I have any overheating problem though.
