I'm thinking of purchasing a 1998 Saab 9-5. I've been having a discussion with the current owner about it, and it seems that it develops a whine when first started.
I've not had chance to go and see it yet, but does anyone have any ideas about what this might be, as in a notorious Saab problem?
Assuming this is reving the engine with the car stationary, could be a number of things, an over tight timing belt, or a failing bearing on the cam belt tensioner, auxilliary belt tensioner or alternator.
Cheers :) It's just so I can go and look it over with an idea of what to look for. I don't mind doing some work on it, but replaching a timing chain, for instance, is probably beyond me and my Haynes/WD40 combination :p
