96 1.6 intermittent electrical prob - earth wire l - bimgot

i've got an intermittent electrical prob with my 306 GLX 1.6 petrol:

ignition will fire up, the dash lights up as usual, as i go to turn the engine over, 3/10 times it will cut out all the electrics and kill everything

eventually the power will come back, popping the hood seems to reset something, but its not exactly consistent - at this point, sometimes it will then start properly, but most of the time the same thing happens again.

i've not had a case where i couldn't get it started yet, and it goes for spells where it doesn't happen at all.. but its happening more regularly than i would like..!

is this pointing to a loose earth wire? i've just had the clutch/gearbox replaced.. anyone had this before?
