02 1.4 Engine over heating - Road_Hog
As per the subject line, the wife's car has overheated on the way to work this morning (ebgine warning light came on as well). She managed to nurse it in, by stopping every time it started get get too hot. I checked the radiator and filled it up earlier in the week with anti-freeze and she checked the expansion tank this morning, so it isn't lack of coolant. I'd appreciate it if anyone can suggest the most likely causes and a check list on how to narrow it down. Hopefully it would be something simple like the thermostat, but life is never that easy.

Did this happen in traffic or on the open road? Was the heater still working while it was over hot? The thermostat is the most likely culprit if it overheated when driving at a reasonable speed, or if in traffic the radiator fan. How strong is the antifreeze mixture?
