Hi All
For some reason, the left hand side of my front widscreen is not demisiting when I hit the button, the right is fine. Anyone had a similar problem?
|
I guess there's a bunch of things it could be other than the screen but exactly the same happened on leased company car I had and the dealer, without any investigation just said it needed a new screen. The leasing company wouldn't authorise it as the car was near the end of the contract (this was years ago in the days of 1 yr warranty).

If you remove the wiper arms and the plastic surround at the base of the windscreen, you will expose the bottom of the screen and you will see two ribbon type connections either side of the screen. One of these will be broken. The one thats not demisting the heated screen. It is unrepairable. Only option is a new screen.

Only option is a new screen.
If you do opt for a new screen I recommend that you specify that you want a genuine replacement fitted or at least one made by the same manufacturer to the same specification. When I had a new Quickclear screen fitted I omitted to specify that I wanted a genuine replacement. The unheated areas at the sides of the screen are much larger than with the original, and the the glass seems very soft. After only a short time the surface was starting to show signs of wear by the wipers. Some screen companies will get you a genuine item and some won't.

Does the OP mean it's an electrically heated front screen, or are they referring to the heater demisting?

That's a good point - with it being a Ford I assumed the reference was to an electrically heated screen.

I think "when I hit the button" in the OP suggests an electric de-mister.
On my focus you can see an small unheated gap down the middle suggesting two halves. Some individual wires appear to have given up but luckily enough still work to make it a very useful feature.
|
My Mondeo has quite a few faulty elements but they're mainly on the far left hand side of the screen so they don't bother me one little bit, my side clears itself almost totally, it's getting used almost every morning now. :-)
|
...it's getting used almost every morning now....
Brilliant feature, can never understand why other makes don't have a version of it.
I think patents come into it somewhere, but that doesn't stop every car having an electrically heated rear window.
|
Yes, I miss it too. My Squashy has loads of toys you don't really need and which confer little benefit but it doesn't have a heated front screen like my Mondeo. Funny old world.

My FocuST does!
Re Les'cargot's comment it is not a matter of original equipment, rather that a few manufacturers are licensed to make the heated screens, the new one in my Mondeo is Pilkington, the old one was Sekurit.
|
Well bully for you Mr Cheese ! It's all right for you.....you get a new job and they give you a FocusST.....I get given an Islington tractor ( not posh enough to be a Chelsea one )........
Hope you enjoy it. Mind your licence......
Wanders off mumbling..........
;-)

I assumed you chose the Cashcow Humph?
Its not all good, 32% BiK (not too bad cos less than £20k BiK Value) and £185 ish p/m fuel benefit, fun for a while though!
|
They wanted me to take one of the cars they already had Cheddar. I was originally offered an X5 3.0 diesel sport with all the trimmings, it even had a telly ! Nice to drive but the BIK was ruinous. The Qashqai was the other available car. It's nice, don't get me wrong and having funded my own cars for donkeys years it's more than a treat to be given one.
No, I'm just jealous of yours. Simple as that really !
;-)

Likewise, a limited choice, there was a CLS500 on the list, I worked out the BIK for fun, £900 + a month!

Yes I miss it too. <<
We have it on our Focus and I wish we didn't.
It lives in a garage so any occasional slight advantage in clearing the screen is outweighed by the perennial annoyance of looking through thin chickenwire when driving into the sunset!
|
Depends how you....um...focus really.....
|
I've recently had my Mondeo written off by an unbelievable piece of driving by a charming (not!!) lady. Fortunately no personal injury.
I've replaced it with a Mazda 6 which is absolutely superb, better than the Mondeo in almost every respect but, dammit, it doesn't have a heated front screen!!
I suppose that I should change my handle to 'scousemazda' but can't be bothered.

GRRRR No it doesent
some peole can still see it even if you focus beyond it. I can even see it with peripheral vision. Specially at night
It depends on your eyes NOT on how you focus.

>>GRRRR No it doesent>>
I actually think it is down to attitude.
If you think it is a good idea by Ford then you accept it is there and dont notice it.
If you are a little anti Ford and/or are aggreived that your Vaulkseatodonddioytissidinaultedendai doesnt have it then you constantly look for it and complain accordingly.
|
Humph? - I've been away and missed something. Have you a real job now??? With a company car?? and its a Cashcow??????????
Cor - what happened?
|
...Cor - what happened?...
Humph,
I'm sure a lot of us are keen to hear how the new job is going.
Keeping it sort of motoring-related, are you still doing the huge mileage you used to?
|
I will update but I'll not pinch Willow's thread to do it !
;-)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the little elements in the screen of Fords.
They constantly catch my peripheral vision, and at night they do weird things to oncoming lights.
I'd certainly never buy a car with a heated windscreen, unless they can make the elements invisible - especially as air con does the job just as well in winter anyway.

Oh no it doesn't! My A/C takes ages to heat up, my quickclear melts thick ice in seconds and so saves me the hassle :-)
Of course if I get the new car that I have planned then I won't have it anymore :-(

Yes, my Escort sporadically does the same. Also when the left half of the 'screen isn't working, neither is the left-hand heated windscreen washer jet (ie the right-hand one develops a dry circle around it on the bonnet from the warmth).
This leads me to believe there is a loose connection somewhere but not necessarily on the ribbon connector on the glass.
On my focus you can see an small unheated gap down the middle suggesting two halves. Some individual wires appear to have given up but luckily enough still work to make it a very useful feature.
More likely there is a bunch of half a dozen borked wires in the middle - when my Escort's screen deigns to work across its whole width there is a 1" wide dead strip about 2" to the left of the interior mirror, as well as half-a-dozen odd single duff wires. When fully working the left circuit and right circuit should end in adjacent wires so no gap should be apparent.
Mine's an R-reg car and I think it still has the original 'screen, so I'm not complaining.

It will be the earth point on the inner wing of the Escort, the same earth is used for the screen and the washer jets, and has a tendancy to corrode. It's a 8mm bolt down the side of the battery.
As for the OP with the Focus, which focus is it Mk1 or Mk2? Again it might be an earth (but the later cars have a common earth by the interior light) but more likely a damaged poewer cable or blown fuse (seperate 30A fuses by the battery)

Providing he selected the correct one from the drop down menu, it's the 98-04 Focus.

--------------
When starting from cold in the morning, I just use tepid water to clear the ice.
Melts even quicker than a heated screen.
I used to like Fords until they started fitting those screens.

..I used to like Fords until they started fitting those screens...
If I look closely at the screen of the CC3, I can see the filament, but it's no distraction in daily use.
Anyone who is bothered by it missed their vocation - should have been a fast jet pilot.
And how anyone can prefer deicing/misting by blasting the fan/air con or messing about with tepid water is beyond me.
|
I have a Focus with a quick-clear screen. I can only see the wires if i concentrate, focus and look very closely.
Should I get my sight checked?
However whenever I see a fighter pilot's view I have no trouble seeing the wires in their screens!

The OP (Willow) hasn't responded to any of the replies or given us any indication whether they have sourced the problem or sorted it out. I would like to know the outcome please. :-)
