Needed rear pads for the CMax earlier in the week. A job I would normally do myself but, as I would need a piston wind back tool plus CMax adapter circa £30 - £35, I entrusted the job to my local trusted indy.

That was on Monday. As the week progressed it became obvious the brakes were binding, so I dropped the car into them this morning for them to have a look. They suggested it may have been the handbrake causing problems and would take a look. Went back at lunchtime and they said sorry, we fitted the pads incorrectly (there are three spring clips on the back of the inner pad which lip around the piston, but they weren't).

Now I could be a little miffed at their incompetance, but I'm not. Instead, I'm really impressed with their honesty. They could very easily have offered another very plausible reason, but no, they were honest. Good on them.

Name them! they are not being shamed.

Name them! they are not being shamed.

The problem with that is that they become so popular that Chris will have to book weeks ahead to get his car sorted, and no quick fixes.

I agree Navy i won't name my MB indy either, he's quite busy enough by his reputation alone.

There's something to be said for recommendation referrals only from the indies point of view too...potential customers get 'vetted' by us loyal and grateful existing ones.

Happy to recommend them to anyone in SE Hampshire. The business is owned and run by two really straightforward (& honest) chaps and they employ a couple of other mechanics.

About 18 months ago they moved to a much larger unit on the small industrial estate they are on. At the same time they invested in some new MOT equipment. Unfortunately, the recession seems to have had some impact as the workshop isn't as full as it was to begin with. They were able to do my brake pads the same day, whereas I'd have to have waited a couple of days in the past, even for a quick job.

I really hope they survive, it must be very competative for a business such as theirs as they don't specialise, just general maintenance and repairs.

I'm surprised your not complaining that they were unable to do a really basic job on a safety critical component, not check it and then pass it fit for you to drive. (The three spring clips fitting into the piston are a very positive fit).

Step forward the man who has never made a mistake. Let alone admit it. Good on them.
