Gti 98 RON? - Tim Allcott
My Golf Gti 8v (1988, PB engine) says on the fuel flap that it would like 98 RON petrol. The garage last night had no idea what octane rating their petrol was (!) a little research on the web indicates I should use super unleaded. Any comments, anyone? Some people on the forum were using Shell Optimax : any conclusions yet?

(oh, alright, I was desperate to post : picked up the car last night. 5 door,Black, un modified, 99k on the clock on an 'F' plate.
Tax to end Nov. MOT to December, 450 quid. :-)!

My autodata sheet states that the PB engine can use either super or normal unleaded without any timing adjustments required. It states that it is only the EV and DX GTi 8v engines of that year that require the timing to be reset to 0 degrees.

Best confirm with your local VW dealer.

Thanks, Ian. That was quick!
I don't have too high an opinion of the local dealer, so may take
it to the local independant specialist instead.

Sounds like a good purchase, I too have just become an owner of a mint 88 GTI in Helios Blue with PB engine (digifant).

You'll be glad to know that the PB engine comes will automatically adjust for 95 octane and will run fine on regular unleaded. However, the earlier K-Jetronic and all 16v cars want either LRP or Optimax.

Golf purists say the K-Jetronic had slightly better throttle response than VWs own Digifant system. However, you can comfort yourself in the knowledge that you don't have to shell out the extra for high octane fuel.

My '88 GTI 8v runs very happily on 95 ron (usually Shell).

I've put two tankfuls of optimax through it. The first seemed to make no difference, but the second (with liberal use of high rpms) seemed to give a little more poke than before with no fuel consumption penalty.

As to throttle response, I'd tentatively suggest than on a F-plate, knackered engine mounts, CV joint play, clogged up breather system and an out of adjustment idle-program microswitch play a greater part than the digifant system.

Just to confirm, the DX engine does need its timing set to 0 degrees (from 6 degrees). My scirocco had this engine, and the timing adjustment was needed so I could run it on 95RON juice.

I ran it for 60K miles like this with no engine problems. It did affect the acceleration and fuel consumption, though.
