Audi A6 2.5TDi - JohnH
I have (had) a beloved Audi 2.6 TDi estate (160,000k, P reg) which has been regularly serviced by Audi dealers (OK I'm a bit overdue for the 150k service)and last week the Cam belt went wrecking the engine. Belt last changed at the 120k service. I was told that the belt was not due for changing until 180k. Do I have any recourse against Audi (not fit for the purpose for which it was intended etc). If not what other options do I have? The car's fine otherwise just run in,in fact!

The problem with the 2.5V6TDi is that if the water pump fails, then it breaks the belt, (See Car-by-Car breakdown and other previous postings.) so it may not be related to the belt change.

(Local independant VW specialist says that a failed pump on a 1.9TDi would also cause the belt to break - but that he's never seen a 1.9TDi with a seized pump... Comments, anyone?)

i assume you have an old audi 100 type a6 fitted with the 5 cyl tdi engine 150bhp. there was a recall about 5 years ago to change the cambelt roller tensioner assembly literally a metal ball bearing enccased in plastic. bet this is sezied thus caused cambelt to break.

Yep, 1997 'P' would be the old 5 cylinder engine....

Not good at all. There's no recourse to the dealership, there are many other variables here, one being the water pump. It's considered good practice to replace it at belt change time.
