I have a T reg Peugeot 306 LX auto which has an autoadaptive gearbox (ie. normal auto plus buttons for sport and snow modes).
There is an intermittent fault where both sport and snow indicator lights start flashing and the unit changes gear, but not correctly. Pressing the sport/snow buttons does not help. Stopping, putting in PARK, switching off and restarting cures the fault. Anyone got any advice.

Sounds distinctly like it's detecting a fault in the autobox and is putting you in "limp home mode". A strip down on one of these boxes is apparently horrendously expensive. my friends 406 did this the other day - he had a tyre which was very low on pressure.
It's bound to be logging a fault, so i'd take it to a dealer and get the codes read.
