02 1.6 Wipers won't park (and now blowing fuse) - Hot Fuse
Hello everybody.

For some months now my wipers won't park. I have to switch the lever down with precision timing to stop them in their parking place. I'm assuming the park switch is faulty and activating (closing or opening) when the wipers are not at park.

From looking into a similar problem with the rear wiper on my brothers focus I discovered the park switch is burried deep within the motor assembly. It looks like it's impossible to change without actually cutting the assembly up.

Unfortunatly I have an MOT coming up so will need to sort it out. Before I buy a new motor I was wondering if any of you guys know of any other common causes that I should rule out first?

Also over the past 5 days it has blown 4 fuses (30 amp). The blown fuses are black with almost all fusible conductor vapourised suggesting a dead short rather than slight over current. I actualy heard one whilst driving, blow!

I'm thinking this could all be down to a dodgy motor or maybe my blown fuses are down to my 'abuse' of the lever switch when I hit it down to manually park. Have I damaged the switch in any way? I'm assuming the steering colunm switch contains/switches all lives though, and wouldn't have any earths (within switch assembly) to short to.

Sorry for the essay!

99% sure its a faulty wiper motor. Seen mention of it before on a dedicated Vauxhall forum.

Thanks dave, It's just I need to rule out much less expensive causes before I buy motor.

I'm all set to buy a new motor (£120), when the guy doing my MOT who apparently has been an auto-electrician for 30 years suggested another fuse or relay could be responsible.

There is only one fuse listed as "wipers", and the book doesn't identify the relays.

Oh, and by the way as long as the wipers can be stopped in a parked position (even though you have to do it yourself) it's not an MOT fail! Yipee.

My yipee's however soon, faded when on my way from MOT my fuse went again after I used my washers. Sooo glad it didn't happen during MOT.

Funny thing is the fuse doesn't blow while the wipers are running...It blows at the point I switch them off

irrespective of when the fuse blows the motor is faulty, washer pump and (faulty) motor causeing over load if you have a mutimeter capable of measuring amps you could probe either side of the fuse to see how much its pulling that said most meters are only capable af measuring 10 amp's and iirc the fuse is a 15 amp, regards TB

Thanks for the reply.

The washers is a bit of a red herring realy because every time before it's blown when just using the wipers. When You squirt the washers the timer relay stays on to allow 3 automatic swipes. I then have to switch the wipers on and off to do the manual park and that's when it blew.

I just find it interesting that the wipers will run quite happily for ages but the fuse only blows when I switch them off (in the park position)..

Must all be tied in to the park switch. If it's broken it's anchor it won't do it's job and could well be getting pushed against the motor casing hence the short.

This makes me think the power for the motor is only transfered to flow via the park switch AFTER the timer relay opens rather than the motor being powered from the park switch and the timer relay. Otherwise the fuse would blow while the wipers are running and pass their park position. ie when the timer relay is powering the motor the park switch is dead hence wwhy it doesnt blow
