corsa 1.2 turbo conversion??? - needhelp
Does anyone know of a company that can supply me with an inlet manifold to take a turbo for a corsa 1.2 8valve sohc engine. Would the manifold from a 1.5 turbo diesel be a direct fit or not??
I only plan to use a turbo with a low pressure boost so I KNow that internal strengthining will not be required as I have seen this done before but can't seem to find any information on it I have the turbo, intercooler and all the other neccesary bits except the manifold.

Any help with this project including ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance MJ

Don't even think about it
Your compression ratio will be too high
Yout bottom end will not be strong enough
Nobody will want to insure you
etc etc ad imfinitum

To answer your inlet manifold question, I would say it is highly unlikely that the one from the Izuzu 1.5 TD will fit. I also think it's highly unlikely that anyone would manufacture one becaus it would be easier to fit a 1.4 or 1.6 engine than turbocharge a 1.2.

If you want a faster car, buy one with a bigger engine.

Sounds like a laugh, probably do about 160 MPH with the extra 600 BHP,err or maybe not, just fit a 'Turbo'badge and make a hole in your exhaust and fit some pieces of cardboard with your mums pegs to the spokes on your wheels.Great Fun!

Thanks to you all for your input some interesting ideas from you all.

The conversion can be done check this link out for your information

The insurance is hardly affected with a specialist insurer about and extra £50 which is a lot cheaper than an engine transplant

And due to low boost output approx 0.85bar NO damage will be done to the engine.

By the way the increase from 45bhp to approx 120bhp speaks for itself really. I guess that no matter what you want to have a go at there will always be a way.

Thanks again for your input and I hope this helps any others who may be interested in the same

By the way the full conversion is only £1100 and being the engine in my car has only done 12000 miles its a better option than a transplant with a 60000 miler don't you think

Go for it son, you're only young once, a turbo will transform your cars performance and upset a few with go faster cars. When i was 20 my 2nd car a Mk1 cortina 1200 was transformed with a 1500 motor followed later by a 90 bhp 1600E (from a Mk2). In those days only lorries had turbos (to my knowledge)so they were not available and i couldn't afford a Lotus engine. The extra stress will shorten the life of the engine/gearbox etc but that's a price you have to pay, enjoy.

I read what you are saying but I am not sure that it is all strictly true IMHO. You say that that increasing the output from 45 bhp to 120 bhp only adds £50 to your insurance, we would all like to know who this insurer is, please! If you don't damage the engine, with all this extra power, you will surely wear it out a lot quicker? How will your brakes, tyres, suspension etc handle a nearly trebled power output? I am sure the conversion can be done and it will probably be loads of fun but how safely and for how long? Good luck in any event!

>And due to low boost output approx 0.85bar NO damage will be done to the engine.

PSA turbo diesel units run about this pressure (almost TWICE atmospheric). This involved fitting bigger pistons, stronger conrods, stronger crankshaft, uprated block casting, better cooling, uprated clutch and uprated driveshafts. Plus some others probably.

If you try and increase from 45 - 120 (which as it's nearly 3 times is going to need more like 3 bar!) you will destroy the engine the first time you pull away hard.

Look at those prices again - the kits for Nova / Corsa were more around the 3k mark than 1k. Makes a bigger engine seem a better choice. Even better still, buy a car that was fitted with a bigger engine in the first place!

At the end of the day it's your money though, and if this is what you want to throw it away on, don't let us stop you! I'm sure it would be a laugh (for about the first 30s until it threw a con rod!)

If you spend only £1100 on the conversion and run it for 12 months without engine damage I will gladly admit I was wrong. Infact I will buy you a pint.

I think my money is safe though

The 1.5 TD manifold will NOT fit on the petrol engine.

I have to ask, WHY ?

I should think that it would be easiler to fit a larger engine or just buy a car with more power.

Find a 1.8 Ecotec engine and showhorn it in. Bit slow for a Vectra but would be a laugh in a Corsa, or even better the 156 BHP unit from the early MK2 Astra 16v GTE.

We used to have a base 1.4 Corsa (82 HP I think) as a pool car and it was great fun in the city.

Richard H is right, just fit a larger engine from the Nova, Corsa, Astra, Cavalier range. If you really want a turbo, use the Cavalier 2.0 turbo engine but in reality the chassis can't handle anything more than about 80bhp.

FIF,

Oddly enough there is a similar concept that bats about town here....even more spooky it's an odd shade of metallic pink.

I look after an early 1.6GSi Corsa. It isn't for sale but the owners value it about the same as the bare bones turbo mentioned (£1100, not the proper kit at c£3000)...and this already has the big alloys, bodykit, bright met paint, crippling seats. Makes you drive like a prat as well, 105bhp is plenty in that bodyshell!

120BHP at 0.85 bar No Way not with that engine or that fuel management system you can not get enhough fuel in at to go near that. Do some reading before you blow not only some money but the bottom out of the engine.

I imagine you wouldn't get enough air in through the manifold either.

Hey, what a lot of negative waves :-) Go for it, they bolt turbos to motorbikes all the time. Get a standard manifold and find a good welder to alter it as needed. You're only young once, so forget all the other comments and follow your instincts. The engine will run hotter so consider a larger radiator.
corsa 1.2 turbo conversion??? - Armitage Shanks{P}
The engine certainly will run hotter - but not for long!

Your course of action is clear.

All this talk of faster cars and increased BHP has got me thinking! Would it be possible to add a turbo to my Audi Coupe 2.0l? If so, what sort of money am I looking at?

Cheers,

Considerably more money than it would cost to sell your 2.0 and buy a 2.3 20V which will give you 170BHP with much bigger brakes and uprated springs / shocks. The old 8 valve VW 'four' doesn't seem to have ever been a very popular subject for turbocharging - whether because of the non-crossflow head design making turbo location difficult, or because the oil capacity in the sump is very limited and a turbo would turn the oil to black tar in no time, I know not.

Thanks Richard! I suspected this might not be the most sensible plan, but thought it was worth asking! Have to admit I have been considering selling mine and upgrading recently, but may be forced to wait another year until money is better, then perhaps the S2 becomes a viable option *evil cackle*

Cheers,

Stuart
