04 1.9 do i need new Turbo Charger? - forest ranger
i have just been to a Seat garage locally and have paid to have My 1.9 GT TDI 130 put
on the computer read out as i was experiencing my car going into limp mode at 3k+ rpm.
I was told previously that it could be a MAFF filter or maybe a vacuum hose or too high input to air flow meter.
They have just told my I need a new Turbo charger....is it a case of same old story..rob the guy..? Or is it correct.
I insisted on retaining the diagnosis sheet and it says;
17965 P1557 Turbo/Supercharger Boost Sensor (A) Circuit
value above upper control limit.

17978 P1570 Engine Control Module disabled.

Please help because they want to charge me £1190+ for the privilege.
Thanks,
Ivan

If it turns out you need a new one, I suggest taking the car to an independent and sourcing a rebuilt turbo, going to work out much cheaper. Just google turbo rebuild to find companies.

The P1557 fault means the turbo is developing too much boost, causing limp mode.

Before doing anything else, see if you can hose down the VNT mechanism and linkage on the turbo with WD40. The linkage can stick, causing overboost. It's a pig to get to as it's at the back of the engine and way down, but you can get at it with a bit of wriggling with your arms and a small can of WD.

Find the turbo, then look for a silvery-coloured mushroom thing with a black rubber hose sprouting out of it. That's the VNT actuator. A metal rod comes out of the opposite side of the mushroom and goes toward the turbo. You need to get the WD40 onto the rod and the lever link at the far end of the rod from the actuator body.

Give it a good 2-3 second spray, then leave it for 10 mins, then soak again. Then take for a drive. Try putting it in 3rd or 4th gear and accelerating from about 1600 rpm to 2400rpm, then lift off, let the revs fall back, then accelerate again. Repeat several times. This will 'work' the VNT mechanism.

If that doesn't work, try changing the N75 valve which controls the VNT. Check also for holes in the vacuum hoses. Only if all of this checks out should you consider replacing the turbo.

Good luck.

As far as I know, the "P1570 ECM disabled" relates to the car's immobiliser, so that shouldn't be affecting the limp mode.

As Craig says. You might want to look at this link re the VNT: tinyurl.com/ykzqqd Another part related to the VNT that might fail is the vacuum actuator. See above. Small beer compared to replacing a turbo unnecessarily!

thank you for the replies...
I will give it a go!!

you are very knowledgeable!

Good luck, I hope these simple things work.

A new N75 valve (these are quite a common fail point) is about £25 if I remember right, and you can fit it yourself, just unplug the connector, pull off the vacuum hoses (remembering which ones go where!!) then reconnect the wires and hoses to the new one.

I have a similar problem with my 1.9tdi 130 Audi. Did you find out what cased your problem?
My local garage suggest that it is liklely to be a sticking turbo on the variable vane. When quizzed about alternatives they said

Split hoses - would get sucking noise
MAF - if faulty would give problem all time and not re-set with ignition turn off
N75 - would be all time

They felt turbo would need taking off and sending to specialist to clean and sort. Total £600ish.
