1999 1.6 wheel bearing or gearbox ? - fergus_1
Hi guys i have a 1999 avensis 1.6,its done 67000 miles,it has a loub rumbeling noise comes in at over 45 mph,seems to be coming fron the passanger side front,sounds worse the smoother the road is,noise is still the asme if the car is in gear or not,i am trying to figure out if it is the wheel bearing or the gear box,any help would be great

Or the cv joint bearings? if the boot is split water and dirt get it and wear the bearings out.

You need to jack this up and spin a wheel can you hear any noise?

Any play? have you checked the gearbox oil level, any leaks?

Try cornering fairly hard and see if the noise is louder in one direction, if so a wheel bearing will be the problem If its a wheel bearing the noise will be consistent with road speed, if its the gearbox it would likely be consistent with engine speed.

could be a bearing rumbling, or it could even be just tyre noise, try swapping the tyres front to back and see if the noise goes, it's the first thing i'd try, and it's free.
