Don't ford have several TDCI engines? I think the Focus engine is Ford's own, but the 1.4 is a joint engine with Peugeot Citroen. The 1.4 comes in several flavours and is in a different state of tune compared with the Peugeot / Citroen units.

I haven't come accross any 1.4 TDCI/HDI problems, but the engine is fairly new, try looking in C3, 206 and 307 groups for more info.

The latest 1.7 DTI Ecotec from vauxhall is very good.

Very economical and a good turn of speed.

As per previous posts, I'm more than happy with my diesel Yaris. All things to all men , except perhaps at tickover when, in all honesty, you can hear a little more inside (and outside) from the engine bay than in my other one - a 1.3 petrol, but at all other times you don't know you're in a diesel and even at tickover there's none of the usual rattle I've been used to. My Mrs. didn't want to be without the Automatic Yaris at first but has come to like the diesel - pleasant gearchange and very relaxed driving style, hence the Auto. is up for grabs. See Classified on this site for details and previous posts of mine in months gone by for Yaris snippets, (of which I've become somewhat an afficionado). For a 1.4 diesel. I reckon it would go like a rocket, especially when it's run in and loosened up, but for me and the good lady it's the astounding economy and easy going driving style that appeals. Maybe we'll get to miss the luxury of not having to change gear and will succumb to another Auto, but for now we'll look forward to extended fuelling stops and, at 60 mpg, more loose change in the pocket. The Auto has averaged 37.8 over the 12 months that we've had it, and I've definitely noticed the mpg improve the longer we've had it.

BTW, does 'spud' still pop in to the backroom now and again? For those who may not know, he's another Diesel Yaris convert and had one of the first to be sold.

Thank you KB and all who have replied, know what you meen about automatic's I had an escort TDi let my daughter have it and bought a Honda Civic auto, super car to drive but oh my about half the miles to the gallon as the diesel, hence the question, I have never seen a Yaris diesel in our part of Cumbria, do you think the 1.4 will stand all the hills, thanks again.

Why not look at the Renault Clio 1.5dci even in the 65bhp version I have it is still very powerful. the econony is excellent at about 60/70mpg and this is with only 360 miles on the clock I cannot wait for it to run in a bit. The only problem I have had with it though up to know is it is noiseier than my last car (although that was quite quiet) and that Renault service is useless the build quality seems good but there are some noises from it (the reason it is going to be looked at)

I am the proud owner of a Focus TDCI Ghia. I would say that the engine provides a perfect blend of performance and economy. Not only is the mpg good, but the insurance group for the car is very low too.

Don't forget that the engine is not the only aspect of the car though. The Focus really is a driver's car and there is huge grip from the tyres to enjoy.

I've had diesel cars before (Citroen Xantia, Fiat) but the Focus is so refined it bears no comparison. And it comes with a 3yr warranty and a widespread dealer network.

The only work I have had done under warranty is the replacement of the cabin filter, which collected water for some reason and resulted in a s**den passenger side floor mat. Apparently this is not an uncommon problem.

If your looking for small cars with diesel engines, the 1.4 HDi 16v in the Citroen C3 is simply amazing. 92Bhp from a petrol 1.4 is pretty good, but then you learn its diesel and it also has 150Lb/Ft... I had a poke around in one the other day, whilst I wasnt too keen on the car as a package, the engine was simply superb.

Ugh C3 :P

Can I suggest the Skoda Fabia 100bhp TDI. Diesel car had 0-60 in 9.0 seconds dead. And it can do over 60mpg. Personally I prefer it to the Yaris as it looks a bit less girly (imo) and I like the VAG connection.
