Does anyone know what is going on down the M4 between Reading and Swindon ? Lots of roadworks every mile, on both sides of the road and lots of purple pipes everywhere. Can't be for the benefit of the motorist could it... ??

I think the purple pipes are for running fibre optic cable along.
Could be a million and one purposes I suppose - SPECS cameras, improved roadside telephony and/or driver information, cable TV.
I'm sure someone knows...

I think you'll find that it's for the new traffic info gantries, at least that's what the purple pipes on the M1 seemed to turn into. All very useful for finding out that little bit quicker why your journey is going to take an extra hour or two!!

In my experience those overhead gantries are a waste of time and money.
Typical example on the North Circular Road tonight, coming out of London it was warning of delays in Trafalgar Square.
Pathetic.

Don't worry: they are about to be replaced by new, easier to understand on the move, picture capable displays.
Just as soon as they have finished installing this type!
