Stepson had a prang in our old Yaris on the slippery roads last week, and has got a quote of £1400 to fix the damage. It might be reasonable, but we've got no idea, so were just wondering if any of the experts on this forum might be able to say whether it appears to be in the right ball park or not.

Garage didn't spend much time looking at it according to stepson; I can imagine that if the chassis was bent in some way then that would push the price up, but they didn't appear to check for that. Perhaps they could just tell from looking at it.

I think it could well be reasonable - these things always seem horrifically expensive. I had a very slight prang in my previous Mercedes B-class, and the insurance co. paid over £1,000 for cosmetic damage which was less severe than yours. The stout old Volvo 850 that I nudged at 2 mph was completely unaffected.

Take the car to 2/3 bodyshops and see what they want.

Are they using new parts or 2nd hand?

On an old car 2nd hand might be justified.

New bumper and bonnet?
Sounds cheap to me,

Front panel and possible radiator / probable fan cowls + motor.... Bargain!

I' think it could be done for less if you find a more backstreety type place. I had both sides of my car resprayed at the rear and new arches and lower quarter panel sections welded in for £400...

Many thanks for the feedback; I'll suggest he gets at least one more quote, but it doesn't sound good...

I've just taken some more pics (in daylight): tinyurl.com/6gorkz

Its not that bad, and by the look of the pictures the parts that it requires are a bonnet, a front panel, a bumper reinforcement panel, a grille, a bumper upper piece, a bumper lower piece and a number plate. I would think that you would be able to source all of these parts (non-genuine but new) for somewhere in the region of £300-£400.

If the radiator isn't leaking then it is probably okay providing it hasn't snapped any mounts off, they are tougher items than you would think! The same goes for the headlights, as long as the mountings are okay then the lamps will be fine to re-use.

That just leaves the labour costs and the paint and materials, which at £1000 isn't cheap cheap. Maybe you can find somewhere else that will give you a slightly lower quote. I am basing this on what I can see in the photo's so anything that isn't obvious has not been taken into account by me.

Looking @ picture 8 of 14, the overhead view of the radiator, I suspect it is damaged (hard to be 100% sure until its out)
If it is damaged, but 'reusable' check how much of the finned area is flattened, the last thing you want is overheating next summer.........

Radiators are suprisingly resilient things and unless they gat punctured by a protruding object in crashes like this, they generally survive okay. Often they will jump out of their rubber mountings rather than bend and break when the front panel bends.

If it is still in good shape then I wouldn't hesitate to refit it. Even if your car was being repaired by an insurance company they wouldn't replace the radiator unless it was really damaged or leaking. If it looks okay and obviously you don't want to spend any more money on this repair than necessary, I would re-use it.

that radiator looks shot. They are sprisingly fragile things these days with plastic sides, easily giving out later. No way would i run around in a car with a radiator thats been in a prang where its been bounced out. , you are always on the verge of dumping the water and cooking the head.

If it looks fine, then I agree, BUT as i said in my other post, IF there is damage to the fins I would demand the radiator to be changed, as this would prevent proper airflow through the rad, creating a 'hotspot' in the rad, and could cause overheating.
The last thing the OP needs is for the head gasket / head to go, whist sat in traffic next summer (if we get one!)

Company in Germany selling brand new bonnet, front wings, strengthener, lights, bumper and other odds and sods as a front end accident repair kit for 500 Euros (400 quid).

tinyurl.com/5raulz

Paint will be around 100 quid, labour around 4 hours(?) and the job's done for around 900 quid. and you can sell the bits you don't need.

As a comparison, my wife had an accident in our Astra a few weeks ago.

The insurance company wrote it off, so I repaired it myself.

It needed a new bumper (which I bought new and painted), bumper reinforcement, one headlight and radiator. It also needed three new tyres, plus a water pump (because it was driven a short distance with no water).

Total cost £450, but I did carry out all work myself.

At this rate £1000 to £1400 including labour looks about right.

Kit from Germany looks ok, but remember the headlights won't be any use because they're be for a LHD car. And soon 500 Euros will be £500 !!

Thanks again chaps. Stepson has a friend who does work on cars so DIY might be an option, but it sounds like he'll just have to pay out something near to the £1400 he's been quoted. I'll tell him to get some more quotes first.
