Speaking to Sky News about the Honda demise,
Ecclestone took a dig at the teams saying, "The trouble is the teams are basically run by technicians who really should be at home playing with their Play-Stations rather than spending fortunes."

More comment @ tinyurl.com/6plqer

So if the european sponsors all close their wallets and traditional European circuits are not paying Bernie then will a middle / far east motor "racing?" programme survive?

I think there is a posibility that the whole F1 scene will go down the tubes.

Dam! Just realised it was the Rally GB this weekend, or was it the Rally Wales, and completely missed it. And it was really well publicised - NOT!
Infact I've lost track of the whole season as regards TV viewing.

You can watch three episodes again on this link. Trial an error unless you read the lingo. There was some very very good coverage this afternoon. Old fashioned rally weather, dry and frosty, lot's of broken and flying cars.

This is now a pathetic excuse for a rally. No night stages, Barely just over two days - Finishes on Sunday morning, stages canceled as there is a spot of ice, No killer kielder,

I'd assumed the 'Austin' was a nickname, but all the references I've found don't mention any other names.

Must have been about 30 years ago we were pootling along in the family Escort when a string of rally cars came shooting past between stages; very impressive.

F1 to hold landmark budget talks - Lud
If they are going to have a standard engine, the teams will have to be allowed a lot of tweaking latitude. I just don't see a sealed unit system with identical power output and delivery as positive in any way at all. It would ruin F1.
F1 to hold landmark budget talks - Altea Ego
If the single engine idea goes ahead Ferrari and MB will pull out. When they do F1 goes down the tubes.

Old Max -hes a fabulous guy, reduce costs he says, and and By the way you have to use this expensive kinetic recovery system, and be held to ransom by a single tyres supplier, and pay huge license fees to the FIA, and pay the drivers huge amounts because they have to pay super licences to the FIA.

I wonder how much money they would save if they did away with the FIA? Or if Bernie put some of his billions back into the sport.

Sports Personality of the Year - Nsar
Whilst I've nothing against Lewis Hamilton who is obviously very good at what he does and comes across as a decent sort, I'm glad it went to an Olympian.

I can't remember who said it recently but his comment was that F1 was like watching two identical washing machines being started side by side at the same time on the same cycle and waiting to see which finished first.
Sports Personality of the Year - rtj70
And the motoring content of this thread is....? And it doesn't fit in IHAQ either.
Sports Personality of the Year - Nsar
F1 is generally considered a motorsport I thought......
Sports Personality of the Year - rtj70
But the thread is Sports Personality of the Year. Happy to move it to the motorsport thread. But with the winner being a cyclist I am not sure where this will go.
Sports Personality of the Year - Nsar
I suppose you could re-title it is F1 a real sport? I imagine putting it the motorsport thread might make it a rather sterile argument!

Not terribly bothered, but thought quite a few BR people might have an opinion.
Sports Personality of the Year - rtj70
But this is a motoring forum. And this thread is not motoring. Motorsport including F1 has its own thread.

I can see why we would want to debate other non-motoring items amongst "friends"....

But the computer posts go in the computer thread, sat nav in the sat nav thread and general questions in IHAQ. So this one didn't fit in any of them hence me pointing out it therefore has to be motoring related.

Rebecca Adlington, IMHO, should have won. All she has as equipment is a swimming suit, cap and goggles, backed by early morning training comprising hundreds of hours and thousands of miles of swimming.

Takes dedication, determination and the will to win without any mechanical means, although I will readily concede that the cycling team was just as dedicated; Lewis has the ability but also has the right car - a critical factor in F1.

Meanwhile Rebecca has already started training for the 2012 Olympics and other events and reckons she will swim some 11,000 miles during training up to that time.
Sports Personality of the Year - ifithelps
No doubt Hoy has a good bike, but it won't confer on him the advantage a Mclaren confers on Hamilton.

Suspicion remains in Formula One that several of the best drivers could win given the right car.

Sports Personality of the Year - rtj70
It's a pity we didn't get to see what the race between Hoy and Hamilton was all about. It was called off due to the conditions.

I know of someone who once ended up racing someone on his push bike. The car driver being impatient behind him and the race just sort of started. Except the bike eventually won because of the speed through corners! (Windy country lanes). Oh and the bike rider did is semi-professionally and the bike di cost over £3000 back in the early 90s.

He only has one race a year in this country, so why should it matter where he lives?

If Damon Hill can win the award twice, I reckon that Hamilton should have won this year.

Can anyone remember which TV series had the catch phrase "is it cos I'm black"?
Sports Personality of the Year - CheapNcheerfull
I am not a really a Hamilton fan, but it is good to see a Brit a the top.

There is no way he deserves such an award, everyone seems to forget that there are many sportsmen and women out there struggling to get where they want to be or are. Hamilton has had his nose wiped since an early age, and as much I respect his father for everything he has sacrificed for Lewis, I just wish we did not have to see him in almost everything that Lewis is involved with.

There are several driver out there better than Hamilton, but do not have the right machine.

"is it cos I am black"

You must be joking........Look at the support he gets, did you ever seen so much support for Jensen Button or Coultard. BTW I am not IC1

>>>You must be joking........Look at the support he gets, did you ever seen so much >>>support for Jensen Button or Coultard.

Coultard drove for McLaren for many years and just wasn't good enough. Button has always been a bit of a joke driver IMO.

I think for a man, whose father was an immigrant from Grenada, has done very well in a competitive sport. I thought he was very sporting last night when coming second.

There are several good drivers today in F1 and I think Hamilton is in the top 3. They used to say that it was the car that made Schumacher the driver he was. No way, he was the greatest (except possibly for Fangio).

I think that Lewis Hamilton is a credit to this country and hope he wins next year.
Sports Personality of the Year - CheapNcheerfull
Quizman,

Completly agree with you, but the results last night can not be put down to your original comments.

Hamilton is Top 3 but has the best Car and it does make as difference, except in the case of Schumacher who probably still is the greatest, even though my idol is Senna.

The saddest thing for F1 was losing Senna, simply because we did not get the chance to see him and Schumacher battle is out is equal machinery ?

Eh?

I'm just going on what all the experts and pundits have said, the best car won the Team championship, the best driver won the WDC... Think BMW might have something to say as well... consistancy and reliablity count as well... You specifically said that he had the best car, not one of the best... he didn't, the best car was a Ferrari.

Hi b308, ( banished - the thread was moved to F1 )

Yep I did say that, but I that is my thought but I am by no way an expert (usually watch the first 20mins or so then go and do something else), I am not sure which car was the most reliable this year, but they must be the two closest on the circuit in terms of performance etc ?

In truth, I like to see a good debate, although I do not think Hamilton is the best out there at the moment.

What do you think of the new proposed rules, will it make it more interesting to watch ?

{This was the most appropriate place for this thread although not totally motorsport related... it is now turning back to F1 so it might make sense to make a new branch to the F1/Motorsport thread to discuss the proposed rule changes for F1.}

Hi b308 ( banished - the thread was moved to F1 )

Ah I see!

Personally I don't like the way they keep messing around with the rules/points, etc, etc...

F1, I thought, was supposed to be the pinacle of motor sport, so either you allow free reign or it just becomes another form of motorsport, but one where you can't overtake!

TBH I don't know what the answer is, I can see where they are coming from and applaud the actions to try to get closer racing... but that dilutes the purity of it... In the 50s and 60s, with less technology it was easier for them but now its all about money... perhaps thats the answer? Put a cap on total spending for each team... that would still aloow them to build whatever they want... but when the money runs out...

New Rules - Altea Ego
The funny thing is that Max's rules and regulations adds expense to the sport. They are so tightly tied down by specification that it costs several million pounds to a get 1 or 2 tenths a lap speed increase. Its classic 80/20 rule.

Do away with regulation on specifications, allow innovation and left field thinking to predominate and racing will get cheaper.

Not to mention the cost of policing them...
New Rules - charlesb
I'm looking forward to next season. Less drag and slick tyres back. Whoopee! we might have some overtaking on the circuit as opposed to the pits.

I for one cannot wait until the refueling is banned in 2010.

I've been watching F1 for nigh on 25 years, and the day they re-introduced refueling was partly the blame for the paint-drying experience of F1 racing, along with grooved tyres, which caused the teams to spend most of their time extracting grip with the aerodynamics, to the detriment of every car behind in the "Dirty" air following.

Overtaking as a result of a slicker pitstop / fueling strategy is completely uninteresting to me and 2010 can't come soon enough.

Totaly free apart from open wheels and a minimum weight (to keep costs down). One tyre to be delivered to organisers two weeks before the race and used in the race, whether starting on it or changed in a pit stop.
If you like you can turn up with a 7 or 8 litre aluminium Chevy based pushrod engine or a two stage turbocharged 2 litre diesel.
Or for that matter a Garret TPE 731!
