Hi, I'm tempted by a Seat Toledo 1.9TD. It's cheap, 2 owners but has 170k on the clock. Is this too high? It's got FSH but I'm wondering how long it will last for...

If its very cheap and its been well serviced, I see no immediate worries. Diesels are known to last well on high mileages, though make sure they get very frequent oil changes. Is it a manual or auto? If the latter, then it could be a big expense looming but a manual box should go for hundreds of thousands.

Cheers for the reply. It's a 96 N reg, £1500. It is Manual and has just had an oil change. How about the Turbo? Any idea how long that'll last?

No ideas on the turbo sorry, perhaps one of our experts can help. By the way I am no mechanic, just offering my own "common sense" thoughts on the subject and drawing from the little experience and knowledge i have gained over the years!

The gearbox (manual) might be OK. How fo you feel about 170,000 mile clutch?

The clutch in my Mercedes 190 1.8E is the original (204,000 miles, 1990 H)and it seems fine. (difficult to type with fingers crossed! much touching of wood, etc).
(svp - this car is also solid black! However, doesn't get cleaned as often as the Audi and is well-overdue for a polish)
Cars are much more durable and reliable than they were 20-30 years ago. People used to photograph the odometer as it 'went round' the 100,000 mark! Most engines, certainly British ones, were on borrowed time after 50,000 miles. Incidentally, the Merc's odometer has 6 digits, ie it will go to 999,999. That's what I call confidence in the product!
Original question: If the car looks ok, feels ok when driven and has a well-documented service history then go for it. You'll be cashing in on the public's phobia of high mileages and getting a cheap car.

Part of the reason I went for my Pug is because I know my Dad's neighbour's have had a 1990 205 from new, have done some silly mileage, 275000 or something. Mum's friend has a diesel 205, 1989, which has done a 60 mile round trip every weekday since new with little trouble.

Wew've had an Escort van go to 500,000;the engine and transmission were good but the body was somewhat past it.

500,000 on an escort! WOW! That must be a ford record! I done 160,000 in my previous cavalier and never had any serious problems. Infact many big vauxhalls have a 6 digit odometer, although unfortunate when it comes to selling your car! I know merc's that have past 300,000 miles and some weeks ago there was a feature on this site of a Volvo that had covered over 2,000,000 miles on the same engine! Some 8 years ago, to quote from the Guiness Book of Records 1994, The highest recorded mileage for a car was 1,442,044 authenticated miles up to 25 Jan 1993 for a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle (owned by Albert Klein of Pasadena, CA). The highest record mileage for an automobile with the original gasoline motor without an overhaul is 577,363 miles to 5 Jan 1993 by Don Champion's 1979 Cadillac

I guess cars have moved on significantly in the last 8 years!
Perhaps others would like to tell us the highest mileages achieved on a single engine or gearbox? I am particular interested to find out the highest mileage that an automatic transmission has lasted without overhaul.

I've heard Peugeot 309 transmissions aren't a strong point (gearbox/driveshafts.) How long can I expect my gearbox to last and has anyone got tips for making it last longer, other than go slow and change gently? (!!!)

I had the same engine in an Audi 80 tdi. It was regularly and carefully maintained, and the turbo was always allowed to cool before switching off the engine etc etc. The turbo died at 91K.

Buy it!
Garrett apparently rate turbos for a 100,000 mile life. My own Rover Turbo has done 117k in 5 1/2 yrs and I expect it to have covered a 1/4 million by the time it's 10. The main thing is to use good oil and change it regularly (follow HJs advice) to ensure the bearings in the turbo (and of course the rest of the engine) remain clean. Varnish and sludge are the turbo bearings biggest enemy.

Go to www.redlineoil.com/products.htm click on "engine oils" at the top of the page then click on "technical information" next to the picture of a bottle of oil. Obviously this site is blowing Red Lines own trumpet, but it gives good info on oil related problems and how synthetics protect better.

A friend got 400,000 miles out of a diesel Nova, although it needed a new set of rings at 340,000. It was still running well when he sold it. As for petrol engines, it seems that one of the strongest is the old Audi 5 cylinder. I once posted a message on an Audi newsgroup asking how long I could expect the engine in my Coupe 20V to last, and got replies from people (mainly in the US) who had 20Vs with upwards of 400K on the clock and still going as well as ever. Especially amazing when you consider that all the 20Vs sold in the States were the 220BHP turbo version. On that basis, I reckon the 170BHP non turbo might last pretty much forever.

You are being most unhelpful.
I want a justification to get rid of my Polo Diesel. It is boring boring boring me, but it's still only done 94000 miles.
My trouble is that whilst I don't mind spending money for a justifiable reason, I have a fairly wide miserly streak and the Polo just keeps on doing 75 miles a day without a problem.
At the current rate of 20000 miles/year, I've got about another 15 year's life left in the thing yet, before I reach your Nova-boy mate's mileage.
Could you post something more helpful please? Like how fragile VW diesels are, how forthecoming government regs will outlaw smoky old-tech oil burners...
