00 2.0 HDi 110 p0220 Error Code Trouble - DaveyH
Hello Everbody,

My fathers 406HDi 110 has decided to start displaying the engine management light, and after a quick code read using the memoscan U581 (with latest updates installed) it picked the fault up straight away as 'p0220 TPS/ pedal position sensor/ Switch b circuit malfunction' Fair enough we thought, the unit should clear that, however, that is the problem, the u581 will quickly and easily read the code, but it refuses to clear it, and does nothing but relink itself whenever we try and clear. Any idea of what it could be? dodgy unit maybe? Any suggestions will be welcome, as my father is a very competant mechanic (currently working at citreon), thank you very much in advance, David.

That code is a known issue on an HDi; has the wiring mod on the MAF sensor's earth been done?

No, i dont think it has been mate, atleast it hasnt been done since he bought it. Ive seen this 'mod' mentioned on a few places around the internet, but my father has not heard of this mod before (since the problem is recent). Do you have any links of descriptions of the process?. Also, on a side note, the side airbag warning light is also illuminated (since yesterday), seems like problem after problem all of a sudden, with the clutch and air con unit also needing replacements.

If your dad works at Citroen; then he'll have access to the data sheet covering the mod on the Xsara and C5.

Basically; the APP sensor shares an earth with, amoung other things, the MAF. One possible cause of this code was thought to be interfence, generated by the MAF, on the earth circuit.

The mod is to identify the two earth wires on the MAF; cut them, insulate the ends of the cut loom and then join and extend them to a good earth point.

There's a side airbag light?

Thank you, ill be sure to pass that on to him immediately. As for the other light, it looked to me like a side airbag warning light, but im guessing its some sort of seatbelt warning light (icon of a person wearing a seatbelt, with what i took to be an airbag on its right side), its decided to show up around the same time as the TPS problem, and randomly goes on and off.

I've just had a hunt through the airbag wiring diagrams and there was indeed a version with 2, completely separate, additional side-bag control modules - hence the light.

Cleaning the under-seat plug with contact cleaner would be a good start; then, if the light doesn't go out, getting the SRS codes read would be even better.

All the airbag modules earth under the kick-panel passenger's side.

Hi, I have the same warning light and fault code showing on my 406 HDI, I was just wondering if the 'MAF' was the mass air flow meter as I can't seem to find this in the manual but have seen it on other cars, and also if this fault would cause higher fuel consumption as recently the cars fuel consumption has risen, also the car has not lacked at all in performance since the warning light come on.
Thanks in advance,Mike.

The MAF is indeed the mass air-flow sensor and can affect the fuel consumption - a P0220 code usually won't.

Thanks, so the most likely solution to the p0220 code is the wiring mod? Also the clutch appears to be slipping, but it has been doing this for about a year now and doesn't seem to be getting worse(though the clutch has done over 100,000miles but it still seems strange, and I've heard the brake/clutch slave cylinder seal goes)? I don't want to waffle on! but also coolant seems to be very slowly leaking from somewhere and I can't seem to pinpoint it, just wondering if there is a known weak spot on 406 cooling systems where it may be leaking from?. Regards,Mike.

The "official" solution to that code is the wiring mod - never found it terribly successful myself.

If the clutch has been slipping for that length of time it isn't wear, so maybe antifreeze getting on to the facings?

Check the water elbow above the clutch housing. When it's a really cold night; shine a torch into a hot engine bay - shows up wisps of steam a treat.

Thanks very much for all the help screwloose, your a real star, ive passed it all on to him and ill get back to you asap to tell you how it goes. Just our luck that the car would be perfect for a few years, then when one problem appears, all the others follow at the same time, sods law.

EDIT: A quick update, the car now seems to be lacking in power at times, but only intermittently, as on a trip to tesco the car no longer seems as perky and responsive as it was.

Sorry about taking ages to reply, there does not seem to be any coolant leaking but the clutch still seems to be slipping and getting worse - so I am assuming now it is a worn clutch. Though now theres another problem, my average fuel consumption has gone down by about 20mpg! I thought this may have been caused by the clutch slipping, but seems too excessive. Recently (about 4 weeks ago) I erased the p0220 code and it has not come up again, could this have lowered my fuel consumption? The car does not lack in performance apart from the clutch slipping when I drive the car hard, and there is no black smoke or warning lights. I have used an injector treatment in the fuel but this has made no difference with my average fuel consumption now at 38.8mpg(mostly motorway miles!) Regards,Mike.
