Had oil and filter changed at a national outlet in september, couple of weeks later checked oil and was halfway on dipstick.Bought a litre bottle of magnet 5/30
which national had put in and topped back up, each time iv checked oil iv had to top up
today i topped up again looked at bottle and noticed iv used 750ml (3/4) litres.

Checked the print out i was given to see the mileage when it was changed which was 65,830 looked at present mileage and is now 69,938.Would 3/4 litre be considerd excessive over 4000 miles. The engine is a 1.6 petrol does not smoke under load as i often look in head lights of cars behind at night.

I think 1 litre per 1,000 miles is deemed normal tolerance

I believe that modern cars that haven't been run-in hard enough, use more oil

Guy I worked with had a used M Class, the thing was drinking a litre of synthetic every 1000 miles £££££££

As above, engines can and do vary in how much oil they drink. Just keep an eye on the dipstick level every week or two.

But 750ml in 4000 miles is nothing really, it's unlikely you'd get any visible smoke.

IIRC my old Passat diesel owner's manual stated that 600ml per 1000km (or 600 miles per pint) was acceptable, which is a LOT of oil.

I also remember from some long-term tests that Car magazine etc did on E-class Benzes in the 90s, especially the 6-cylinder engines.

Oil consumption on those worked out at 250 miles per pint :-[

We have two cars

2003 Forester 2.0x = oil usage in 24,000 miles = 0, never needed to top up once
1969 E Type = since engine rebuild 1997 = 0

and 1 boat

new 115hp Mercury Outboard - instructions to use at full revs for 1 minute in 10 for first 10 hours, after approx 100 hours, oil use = 0

All enginers properly run-in

The reason i asked was in 20yrs of owning cars iv always bought ex rep mobiles
3 sierras and 3 mondeoe's all 3 to 4yrs old and 100k+ on them and full service history and not one ever used a drop of oil.
I bought this car in june with 59k miles and 1 private
owner which was a trade in at the garage i bought it off. Proves that a good thrashing
in the early days by a rep who doesnt give a damn works wonders.

My dads Escort 1.6 used no oil between top ups, eventually when it hit 90k it did use a very little. However my dads Fiesta now uses about 1 litre per 1500 miles and I have not once blue smoke from it, there is a puff at startup but taht is probably just the valve stem seals. I wouldn't too much about it.

When it starts burning 1 litre of oil per 200 miles like my old car did that is the time to worry.

I agree with others - sounds like the OP's car was not run-in properly.

Genuine question - is it too late now?

Interesting. The oil consumption on the three MBs (1989 to 1996; all six cylinder, two M103 and one M104) that I know intimately is negligible, rarely requiring a top-up between annual services. One of those is at 177k and another 144k.

In any event, a litre per thousand kilometres seems to be regarded as the point at which something may need looking at.

Roger, IIRC it was a 280 E-class saloon that Car had on LTT, around 1992. Possibly it wasn't run in during Car's ownership.

Car's LTT VW Corrado 16V apparently did 5-600 mpp until it had done 10K miles, then it stopped using oil. A friend had a Corrado 16V that did the same.

I don't think modern engines should use 'much' oil if they have been treated properly. It may be worth asking where the oil is going - if down the exhaust, does it do the cat any good?

Certainly in the case of my 306 HDi, in 50K miles the oil level has never moved between oil changes.

My old Fiesta was blue smoking like a steam train, on the first MOT it says emission test terminated due to excessive smoke :D. I put some stop smoke in and it passed, but the car was scrapped very shortly afterwards.

However with the stop smoke in it passed the MOT with flying colours in terms if emisions which would suggest the cat was fine, though they do say it does damage the cat I think it has to excessive.
