I can't help you with the V8 but three weeks ago a mate of mine turned up with a 3.0ltr sport on 02 plate - just a month inside the new tax band - it is a dark blue with cream leather and auto - what a nice car - at moment he is getting management light on for number one and two plugs - they have been changed and also new gaskets but light comes and goes - that said it runs and drives a dream - we are all jealous of it and all for £2.5k

good cars, very comfortable, generally reliable, loads of kit in them, shallow boot

had mine 6.5 years ('99 3.0 litre auto SE)

common faults on older ones:
-split in plastic header tank, hard to notice, gradual water loss, usually noticed by air con not heating up
- coils can fail (individual ones on each cylinder) old problem, easily sorted as the newer coils don't do it. coil not that expensive
- door locks can be faulty (as on X Type), if it does it change the lock i.e. fiddling, WD40 etc doesn't work
- heater valve switch

early V8's had the Nikasil bore problems, but i'd imagine that would have either been sorted by now or will never be a problem...googling it will no doubt inform you more, i'm not technically minded

fuel consumption won't be good on the V8. The V6 is 15 in heavy traffic, 18 lighter city traffic, 26 on fast long run, 30ish on more careful long run.

Engine and transmission-wise it will be prone to the same problems (and delights) as an XJ8 of similar vintage.

Water pump and cam-chain tensioners:

The original water pump has a plastic impellor that can become brittle and disintegrate leading to overheating.

Early cam-chain tensioners can break. Check that there is no rattle from the front of the engine. If there is, it's probably the tensioners that need replacing immediately.

If the car has been serviced to schedule by a main dealer it's unlikely that you'll have a problem. The changes may even have been done already. The cost to replace all four tensioners, chains and waterpump is around £1200 at an independent.

Nikasil:

These engines had Nikasil lined bores which suffered wear damage due to the high sulphur content of UK fuels in the 90's. BMW and Porsche had similar problems. Jaguar replaced any damaged engine free of charge up to 100k or 5years (iirc) as long as it had FMDSH. Replaced engines are identified by a green plate at the top-rear of the block.

The first symptoms are poor cold starting and a rough idle.

If the engine starts easily on the first turn of the key and idles smoothly you shouldn't have any worries. UK fuels are now "low-sulphur" so no further damage is likely. If you have any doubts, get a blow-by/compression test done before you buy.

Other than the above, these engines are pretty bullet-proof.

The ZF auto-box is delightfully smooth and reliable. Jaguar say that it is "sealed for life" but they can be serviced and repaired by ZF specialists if necessary.

Fuel consumption will be low/mid 20's on a mix of urban and suburban use. My '99 3.2 XJ8 averages around 23mpg which is what Jaguar specify for their "Combined" consumption figure. The 4.0 S-Type is quoted as 22.7mpg "Combined".

In the six years I've owned the XJ the only non-service expenditure has been:

Power steering oil cooler - £120 fitted
Oxygen sensor - about £350 fitted
Battery - about £65 (non-Jaguar)
Transmission selector switch (car would start in Neutral but not Park) - about £120 fitted
2 headlights (stone damaged lenses) - £70 each
