It's within VAG's tolerances but on the high side.

One thing which does not help this problem is VAG's notion of air filter element change intervals. As the element becomes obstructed the negative pressure at the compressor intake increases which in turn draws more oil from the crankcase via the breather.

I changed the element on my AWX engine at about 30k km and it was very dirty indeed - these engines aspirate huge quantities of air. VAG's stipulated change interval (for some engines) of 60k km is in my view, hopelessly optimistic even in clean environments.

659.

What does the handbook say?

Most manufacturers mention that an engine *can* consume up to 0.6 litres in 1000km (1 litre in 1000 miles).

1 litre of oil every 15k is acually quite good for a PD TDI engine. Mine is about the same.
