Ford EGR for a 2.5 DI Diesel - SPOSPE
Can anyone please tell me how to check and set-up the EGR on a Ford 2.5 litre DI Diesel engine?

I have a Haynes manual, but it is not very helpful and several mechanics that I have asked simply have not known.

I suspect that the EGR may be defective / not set correctly as the exhaust is showing some black smoke.

I don't think you can do much with them. The one faulty valve I've come across in a fleet of 30 odd transits caused other problems such as dense clouds of acrid smoke and poor performance for the first few minutes after a cold start.
Try blanking off the exhaust intake pipe to the valve, put half a can of injector cleaner in the fuel filter and the other half in the tank. Give the engine a good hard run, With any luck it should be fairly smoke free after this. Check for smoke on next cold start. If all is well, reconnect egr valve and see if smoke returns on next cold start. (cold start means at least overnight)
