1997 - Automatic gearbox repair - Daedalus
The auto box on my 1997 Audi S8 was repaired a year last Feb and after 25,000 miles went again. It was out of warranty but they said it should not have happpend so charged about a 1/3rd of the full cost to sort it out again. Its now showing signs of going again after a further10,000 miles. I dont really want to go back to them for a third time but I'm not sure who else to go to (they actully have a good reputation locally). I remember HJ recommending a place down south (Herts???) that was good, but cannot remember the name of it. Can anyone in the back room help?

Thanks

Bill

Try somebody listed here www.zf-group.co.uk/car_service.htm

(unless the company which did it before was a ZF dealer).

Going rate for an A8/S8 rebuild seems to be about £1750-2000 to be done properly. Many are being scrapped, sadly, because of it.

All sympathy to you. That's a sad history. What's the total mileage on the car?

The most important thing is that they have worked on an A8 before. There is so much to get wrong on an A8 you need somebody who knows the car.

The fact that you've been through 3 gearboxes makes we wonder if there is something else wrong as well. Although A8's (particularly 97-00 ones) get through gearboxes in the same way other cars get through brake pads 3 in 30k miles seems a bit extreme. There are all sorts of other things which can cause gearboxes to play up on them including dodgy MAF sensors and ECU's.

Well an update for you. I took the car to King Autos of Epson who seem to recommended by the HJ site, they checked all of the pressures running codes etc and gave it the thumbs up. That was on the 1st of August just before we went on holiday, today I drove home from work and parked up to get a paper and when I got back in big bang on engaging gear and limp home in 3rd. Checked the fault code via VagCom and found it said wrong ratio. Back to the Auto box place and caught them just as they were leaving they have agreed to sort it out free of charge and seem to be as upset about it as me. The Hyundai Accent is not much of a replacement but at least I can get to work. Will let you know what happens.

I sympathise. I had endless trouble with an A6 box of about that vintage which spent weeks off the road one summer and ended up with me successfully suing a garage for about £1500 (about £750 les than the value of thecar). I had to replace the ECU eventually but I never trusted the thing.

Only today I found myself snooping around on Autotrader at All Roads and then shuddered at the memory. I will never own a VAG product again.

If you do a forum search in technical you may find some links to threads which named some specialists but they were all in the North.

Good luck.

Hi, I run an A6 Tiptronic, recently had a problem with the box, 80k on the clock, there was a hidious judder between 1st and 2nd,which was getting worse as the days went on, also had a slight delay on pull away, I had it diagnosed, and the result was the gearbox Ecu, although sceptical I had it changed at a cost of £1100, result............Perfect
I had one "specialist" quote me over 3k for a new box rebuild with the latest 7 clutches, turned out that mine was built with the 7 clutch box to start with. some specialist

The Titanic was built by Specialists.

If it has "7 clutches" then it is probably a multitronic rather than an auto. A very different gearbox (with a completely different set of problems!).

I think 1997 predates Audi's Multitronic boxes. My 1998 A6 2.8 has the ZF ['toothed wheel factory'] 5HP 19 box as fitted to Porsches and BMWs of similar power and vintage. [Its 'Tiptronic' bolt-on manual bit was patented by Porsche. ] I think it's fairly bomb-proof. The S8 is probably a 4.2 with much more power and a different box. I'd be interested to know which one.
