Ford Escort - not start - williamf
Hi

I have a 1992 Ford Escort Cabriolrt (130PS). I have owned the car for 6 years. It has developed a fault, that after more then a journey of 5 miles, when engine temperature has been achieved, if you stop, the car will not start for 10 minutes to 1 hour plus. The car never cuts out whilst driving, runs perfectly.
When trying to start the car, the engine will turn for as long as the battery would last. When it does start, tyhe car fires up and runs perfectly, no miss-fire, nothing wrong. When the car will not start the fuel pump is definatley not running.
I have tried several garages and Ford technical services to no avail.
Anybody any idea's

It's possibly too obvious, but is it the fuel pump relay at fault?

My suggestion is that you may have a problem with the dreaded Escort fusebox which of course contains the fuel pump relay and the engine management relay. If you have not had a replacement fusebox I would renew it as they are a major fault area in Escorts of this vintage.

Why not try to temporarily wire the fuel pump directly, (a switch and suitable inline fuse would be a wise safety precaution). This will then prove the problem absolutely. It may be wise move to take the power feed from an ignition switched feed to give an extra degree of safety.

Not a long term fix - does any one know if fuel pump relay is controlled by ECU at this age? to prevent restarts with cold engine and minimise Cat damage?

possibly crankshaft sensor going open circuit with the heat soaking into it after a run.
