2005 2.0 Dual mass flywheel - hammer
I have a peugeot 307 2.0 hdi, and i have been told that i need a new duel mass flywheel because the radial movement is excessive. Can anyone tell me what the radial movement should be?

If anyone could tell you (which I doubt), how would you check the measurement, and how did whoever tell you that the movement was excessive, measure it?

I suspect this is a phrase used to tell you it's kernackered.

Why was it checked in the first place? What symptoms were noticed?

There was a vibration

Developing an engine vibration on a DMF-equipped car is usually the end for the DMF.

Anything else noticed? A squeak at key-off? A knock when first cranking?

type in the search bar of My Space there was/is an excellent video on there explains it in simple terms

Screwloose, my 53 plate 2.0 HDi 110 (98000 miles) has developed the squeak at engine stop, and when crawling along in first or second gear. The noise seems to be coming from the gearbox end, so I'm fairly sure it is the DMF.

Is this an urgent problem or is it safe to drive until the symptoms get worse?

Many thanks,

Richard

>>Is this an urgent problem...

If it is the DMF, people less scrupulous than I would now be looking at trading the car in for a newer one.

However, it's worth double checking the pulley on the crank nose for de-bonding of the rubber - that's a much less expensive repair.

Thanks, Number_cruncher.

It's always a toss-up whether to sell a car. Trouble is I haven't had the car for long, I've already spent quite a bit putting other things right, and I'd like to get some of the benefit.

I took the belt off and had a look at the pulley and it seems OK. I started the engine with the belt off and the noise was still there, so I think it probably is the DMF.

Had a dual mass flywheel & clutch fail on my 02 plate 2.0 HDI (53K miles). Peugeot wanted £1300 to replace. Got the job done by specialist non dealer for £720, and they used a standard flywheel as the dual mass is known to have a limited life.

If in NE Hants go to Motorwise, off the A30 near Hartley Wintney.

Retro-fitting a standard flywheel is madness on one of these; they've got designed-in dual-mass at both ends of the crank and tend to fret the cam-belt if that's altered.

The cost of fixing that makes a DMF look like very small beer.

I would recommend getting the DMF done straight away, or trade the car in. My DMF sheared off, jamming the engine. Still got the pics of it. Fortunately, it only scored the inside of the gearbox bell housing and smashed the sensor on top of the gearbox. Did the job myself but still cost £530, so if you take it to a local garage expect a bill of £700 plus.

Valeo has a solid flywheel conversion solution (it's name is Kit 4P) to replace the Dual Mass Flywheel + the original kit. I've done the replacement and I don't experience problems anymore. They do this for other applications since years.

As a matter of academic interest to me, do these problems suggest that the DMF was not a clever idea in the first place, or is it an unavoidable nuisance? Do DMFs have a recommended lifespan like a cambelt, or are failures just bad luck or a faulty original?

Basically; they have proved not fit for their purpose.

I have been told by my Peugeot garage (in early Dec 08) that my Dual mass fly wheel is 'disintegrating'. The garage noticed it when they had a laptop running on a road test for another problem I had at the time.

They stated its a big job, about £1200. I personally can't notice any change in the clutch since I bought it (Dec 07) but my boyfriend thinks there is a squeak sometimes. I now nervously drive the car and want to sell it due to all the other things that have gone/going wrong.

Q - How long have I got till it breaks please? (I am guess this is like how long is a piece of string!)

Q - and will it be worse if I wait for it to go rather than replace it before it breaks please.

Many thanks for any advice.

question 1. yep string!
Think about it this way, if the car was your favourite pair of underpants with frayed elastic....at some point its going to let you down in a big way!!! hahaha
question 2. if it breaks you'll have to tow the car to a dealer to trade it in, and doubt you'll have much luck selling it privately you can't offer a test drive...
.
looks like trading it in now, seems the best thing to do, I once had a 10k mondeo that I traded in after only 1yr. it was a friday afternoon car, with one fault after the other, sometimes its best just to cut your losses and get out of the deal.
good luck
PAUL.

Thank you Paul G1pdc :o) I really appreciate your advice. My instincts agree with you.

Bought for £5K Dec 07 and so far spent £1800 (inc Mot cost and 4 tyres) but there are still a few niggles that need sorting out. I have already been towed back from Bristol (>100 miles) and also been stuck in Leics having to get a hire car whilst it was being fixed.

My boyf is without car at the mo due to his being written off after a teeny weeny bump b4 Xmas, so once he has got a car mine will be for the chop - I'll just have to keep everything crossed the dual mass fly wheel doesn't go before then!!!

I guess the moral issues are for another debate!

And also what to get next ! Def not a Friday afternoon car or French!

Thank you.

It is rumoured that many French cars are only built on Fridays! I wish you a good outcome though!

Does the 307 1.6 HDI (54 plate) also have this 'great' system?
