Finger marks on paintwork on two silver cars - Taylor
I'm not doing much to the bodywork of two sound cars, but greasy fingermarks seem to be stuck under (I'm guessing) subsequent car wash wax coats.

Can anyone advise what to cut back with and restore a uniform colour? or other remedies.

Well it turns out I just had to get out there with some car polish and polish the wax and the prints away.

Sorted.

Funnily enough - there has been finger prints in a few areas on my metallic black car ever since I bought it 2.5 years ago ... I did try some silly con spray polish on it last year but I dare say it needs some elbow grease stuff i.e wax!

We have two silver cars that both have white 'patches' on the paint in a few places. They look to me like sun-cream residue (from hands with suncream on them) but they don't (hand) polish out. We had to have the boot sprayed on one of the cars and the bodyshop thought the patches were caused by moisture under the lacquer. He thought a high speed polish might heat up the paint and cure the problem. It did but only for a while, and the patches have returned.

Weird, and I wish I knew how to get rid of them for good.

I am in the same position with the Altea.
I have dull marks on the A pillar and at one of the wings. It resembles what has been discussed here but I cannot get it to shift. Ihave clayed the car and repolished it and they do disappear for a while but then come back.

In all of years of owning cars, I don't think I have had a car with so much paint related issues.. Scratches, chips, dulling etc that I am sure with any other car would just not be an issue.

I've wondered Bobby, if when my car was valeted at the used car dealers - they sealed the surface with some silly con product ... or it could be as boxter says and its under the lacquer ... it bothers me but it doesn't bother me if you know what I mean ... maybe a mild cutting compound would do the job?

My S60 has some of these on the C pillars. They disappear after polishing, but return after a few weeks, always in the same place. They look just like greasy thumbprints.

My last Focus had four circular shadows in each corner on the inside of the rear screen.

I'm convinced they were from the suction cups used at the factory to handle (robot) the screen.

No amount of hot soapy water, polish or anything else I could think of would shift these marks.

They were only visible in certain light conditions, so I gave up in the end.

I reckon the suction cups were applied to the glass before it had fully set/cured/hardened, and the marks were more than skin deep and therefore permanent.

Exactly the same as on my car - looks like a grease monkey has only recently made them but - they've been there for 2.5 years!

I blame the water based paint used these days - our 5 month old Mazda has more chips and scratch's than any other car I have ever had - A mate who is a refinishing specialist polished a load out down the side but it doesn't take much to create new one's - The car also has white blobs in paint which seems to be common these days. -- Never buy a black car - looks good after a wash and polish but it only lasts 5 minutes.
