Does the pedal travel shorten if you pull the handbrake on 1 or 2 notches?

Check the handbrake adjustment and see if the rear shoes need adjusting. Some Pu/Cits have auto adjusters in the rear shoes that seize up, even at low mileage.

As BB says these will be auto take-up shoes. The most usual reason for this problem on the ZX/306's I see is worn rear brake shoes (and the odd worn drum).

The shoes may not look that bad (ie. nowhere near down to the metal) but the difference for new ones will be staggering.

In addition to the two replies it's also likely that the auto adjust mechanism has siezed. These Cit/Pug rear drums need the hub nuts removed to inspect the innards and it probably gets neglected.

also I found the little lever that operates the adjusting sprocket thingy (not great on technical terms!) doesnt make good contact - may need to bend it a bit (after dismantling the adjusting arm, cleaning and greasing)

Thankyou all for your help, it turned out to be the automatic adjuster mechanism that was at fault tonyh
