318i S '93 Coupe auto. Clutch/gear probs - giules

I have an automatic BMW 318i S coupe that judders when moving off, tricky if i need to move quickly at junctions/roundabouts. It only happens when it tries to find 1st/2nd but has no probs changing gear at higher speeds. It does occasionally slip out of gear, mostly on longer journeys or slow traffic. Moving off slowly seems to keep it in check but is not ideal. Is this a common problem with automatics or is the clutch on it's way out?

That's not a good sign; at the very least get the fluid level and condition checked.
