1991 1.8 - Dies when cold -seems like flooding - PCshedman
1991 Golf 1.8 Driver auto starts to die when slowed down on the brakes at a tight bend or setting-off at the top of a hill when cold. Can retrieve by flooring accelerator in neutral with black smoke in exhaust. Fine thereafter. Any clues folks?

Engine coolant temperature sensor? What's the engine code on that one?

Check that the carb choke pull down vacuum unit is working. It can be checked without dismantling anything. Look for the choke flap actuating rod which sits high up on the outside right hand side of the carb, a torch helps.

Sounds like carb icing, but aren't Golfs fuel injected at this age?

No its a carb. It did it again today and took a couple of minutes with my foot down to stop it sounding like it was running on one cylinder. When it picked up , off and away.

In that case it really does sound like good old carb icing. Check the warm air intake and associated tubes and valves into the air filter. Its a common problem on VWs with carbs, the warm air pipe (usually largeish) feeding the air filter can spilt or fall off, or the thermostatic vacuum operated valves can stick or fail. Its worst at medium cruising speeds, usually doesn't happen in slow traffic (less air flow) and when flat out on the motorway(more heat).

This happened to mine a few years ago. Fixed it be replacing the large bore plastic tube which feeds warm air into the carb. The original one had a foam surround which had perished letting in cold air. Replaced it with a similar sized corrogatued tube from Halfrods for about £2.
