Improving Radio Reception - Pugugly {P}
Has anyone got any experience of replacing the standard "beesting" aerial on Skoda (or any car for that matter) with a better performing specimen - FM is a bit crackly and annoying.

I'm sure I have heard of a signal booster thing which would help. Might involve a bit of wiring in. Similar effect to those booster boxes you can use indoors for the TV. Not sure where you get them but I'm certain someone will know.

The booster wont work. Most VW family aerial setups appear to be electronic "boosted" ones. whats the aerial like PU, one of the 8-12inch jobs, black with what looks like a wire running round it?

Is it interference or just poor signal? whats AM like?

No wire twisted around it - MrsPU's golf has it. Its FM and its on an aftermarket radio - Alpine. Basically its crackling even when stationary. Don't use AM so I'm not worried about that really.
I've managed to de-activate the "dx" thing and its a bit better. It was professionally fitted so ultimately I can complain to them.

There needs to be 5v or 12v (sorry can't remember) send up the coaxial cable in order to power the amplifier in the aerial base. Many aftermarket radios don't do this, and need an inline power injector fitting.

Ah aftermarket? with the orginal aerial?

If so the guy may not have installed it correctly and the aerial amp my not be getting power. (the power goes up the aerial lead)

Thanks - will swap aerials with the Golf when she's sleeping. If that fails its back to the workshop at the beginning of the year. Thanks all.

PU, don't know if its the same issue but I know that on the other forums there was various talks about how to change the head unit in a vrS and although it can be done, you need to do something with the aerial as. IIRC, the head unit has the booster for the aerial built into it?

Wow, this takes me back a few years, getting home fitted radios to work properly! If it's crackling it could be a bad earth on the radio or aerial. It could be some part of your HT not properly suppressed but you can check that by seeing if it affects any other nearby radios, in car or not.

P, log on to the Briskoda forum - its discussed at length on there and you may not need that booster - just do a search on it!

iv'e got a 2 foot length of threaded steel bar as an antenna , works a treat

Before you do anything else, clean the threads on the aerial and the adaptor on the roof.

I think you'll find the aerial requires 12v DC supplied via an additional red wire coming from the bast of the "beesting" (the base that the whip screws onto houses the electronic circuitry for the amplifier). The DC power is NOT supplied up the coax. Even a basic aftermarket radio has a switched +12v DC output designed to power signal ampifiers, switch on accessories etc - I would make sure this is connected! this is the arrangement with my vehicle.

I have not come across a problem of ignition interference on modern vehicles - used to be a big problem on much older cars. Check the ground connections on both the radio and aerial!

got to say DanG this is what i always find too on any ive had to mess with

My money would be on the signal booster. I've had 3 VW's and all of them needed a booster for an aftermarket radio.

I got my last one from here: www.nexxia.co.uk/Car_Stereo_fitting_kits/antenna_a...m

Very easy to fit. Just check if you have an ISO or DIN connection on your skoda.

Job sorted - finally got a chance to go to a specialist. Faulty signal amp - replacd and now as clear as a bell.

I was going to reply to an earlier posting, (with a flippant remark), but thought better of it since it would have appeared out of sequence and you would have deleted my original thought!

But try this anyway.

'and I always thought you were more of a coathanger guy'.

PU Now you can delete both contributions.
