How do you know that it is the thermostat that is defective? It could be the connection to the thermostat or the thermostat could be blocked by something, or the calibration data for the thermostat or the ECU itself. Your thermostat seems to be working as it is picking up temperature changes of the correct magnitude, just not quite in the expected range.

im guessing its the thermostat iv had car for 5 yrs its done 120000
miles its takes about 20 mins to get warmth in car and seems to
me like thermostat stuck open iv checked connections thought it might
of been that changed inlet manifold back in march so there was a chance
i might of knocked it off but all seems in order

I would guess that the t/stat is red rusty and corroded. It has to be changed as a complete assy together with the housing. Not a 5 min job,you will probably have to remove the pas pump.hth

not a job im looking forward to but one thats needs to been done
not only is it cold in car but mpg is not so good neither ecu must
think engine is cold cause it idles at 1150rpm until engine reaches about 80c
but by then im ready to get out as journey is over so i reckon it is over
fueling aswell

And in the mk2 it is replaceable on its own, costs less than a tenner, and takes 10 minutes including refilling and bleeding the system. Progress??

What possible justification can there be for a design that forces you to change the housing as well as the 'stat? Unnecessary expense, waste and use of resources.

i agree DP and what a place to put it at bottom of engine behind water pump
what other car has to have its headlight removed to access such part
manufacturers have you by the bloomers cause there isnt a pattern part
avalable so they charge the earth for such a simple part

It's not just Feelers that do this. The humble Skoda felicia has a one piece thermostat and housing cost £25, but easier to fit!
It is all in the pursuit of low carbon emissions, I think.
