Fault Code readers - Surrey_Scientist

i am considering buying a cheap fault-code reader and was looking for some advice.

Mainly just to check for codes periodically when I am servicing my cars, as inthe past I have had problems, and there has been fault codes lodged inthe ECU when read, and the dashboard light has not come on (why ??)

Ihave a 1994 Corolla, (UK car) and a 1995 Celica (grey import)


IS there a "standard" for diagnostic ports/codes etc. that manufacturers conform to, or does everyone use a different one.

So of course, does that mean one will need a differnet reader for each car, or can the readers handle different makes, or subsets of makes - my family and I tend to buy japanese cars

Any info on this would be appreciated as I know not a lot about this area.

Fault Code readers - adverse camber
there is a standard(ish) but it wont apply to cars that old. I would try specialist toyota forums and see what is available.

You don't need a code-reader; both these cars have manual reading systems and flash the codes from the MIL light when E1 and TE1 are linked in the diag socket.

For anything more than that, you'll need to spend upwards of £1500.
