1996 Escort TD won't start

1996 Escort TD won't start - harv54
My sons Escort 1.8TD is suddenly refusing to start. Turn the key and there is not even a click. The battery is fine. If you insert the red key the immobiliser led initially flashes rapidly followed by what I assume is a fault code. That is 3 flashes followed by 2 flashes. Does anyone know what this means?
