Turbo gone on the sharan... - mani
My sis owns a 04 plate vw sharan 1.9 tdi and she noticed it wasnt picking up speed so she gave it to the dealership for a look over and they've come back sayin the turbo's gone and quoted a price of roughly 1300!

firstly - could it be anythign else? is it worth sendin the car to a local garage to see what they say?

2ndly - is the price range for fittin etc right?

finally - could it be done cheaper and just as good elsewhere?

It's a VNT or variable nozzle turbo & these are A. Prone to failure & B. damned expensive. However any Turbo Technics agent could beat the dealership quote. Car mechanics a few months ago had a Sharanwith exactly this problem, probably worth getting a back dated copy of same.

Another nail in the coffin of diesels in my view!

yeah i'm emailing around to see how much they'd cost

are they difficult to fix - not by myself - but if i took it to a decent garage would they b able to fix it properly?

worst thing is that the warrantly has only just ran out - they've said they'll ask VW if they can as courtesy pay some of the costs but i aint too hopeful of htat!

If it's a vnt turbo the vanes could have become stuck through carbon deposits and just need a good clean. I would want proof that all the vacuum pipes/control valves have been checked before forking out for a turbo as it's very common to change turbos when they are actually ok.
New turbo is £4- 600, don't recommend re-con's as small price saving isn't worth the hassle if they haven't been set up properly.

yeah i've got prices for a new one in the region of 300-500

would a 2 yr old 7 seater build up so much carbon deposits that it wud require cleaning?

Quite often the turbo is condemned, but the fault is only with the peripherals. If the turbo had actually failed its unmistakeable as it runs faster than a dentists drill! There are countless threads dealing with VNT/turbo maintenance. Your reported symptoms seem to be MAF (replaceable at exchange price of around £80 I think) or possibly VNT mechanism, for which DIY cleaning has been reported on here, or even just a misplaced hose. Funny old things, dealers: they like to start at the top (price-wise) and then find that "it was only a bit of carbon, Sir." Suggest avoid dealer who is trying it on, but arm yourself/sibling with info first.

yeah i'll let her know nortones

thanks

would you think it wise for me to take it to an independant and askin them to give the valves etc a clean over?

how much would htat be?

i just spoke to her and about a month ago she gave hte car in for service saying the car was giving off alot of black fumes

to which when they returned the car they said that it was carbon deposits there and they cleaned them out.

could these be the same carbon deposits that wud've affected this or is this a sure sign that it wud b carbon deposits?

Chicken and egg here. Assuming proper fuel and lube, shouldn't be giving off black smoke. Some people have used Bosch diesel fuel injection specialists: they should be able to diagnose issues that maybe the dealer cannot.

A friend of mine is a Diesel repair specialist and replaces a fair number of Sharan turbo's. I know its a hell of job because whenever he does one there is a lot of cursing and swearing, and he's normally a very calm guy. Access is awkward and siezed fastners are a problem. They are a VNT turbo (Garret I think?) and I think the rack can jam, which ends up with the car going into a limp-home mode. Whether or not they can be cleaned up I don't know - my mate always seems to just swap them out.
Certainly with a repair like this you should get a second opinion. Give Turbo Technics' HQ in Northampton a call and see if they have an agent in your area.
