change the fuel filter first and see if that helps ,even if it has been recently changed a little bit of water can make it hard to get fuel through and make it draw air elsewhere

It's a crucial part of the fuelling system; so it needs fitting and setting up by a diesel specialist. They're around £90 for the unit and half an hour to fit and calibrate.
Test for air bubbles in the return line first.

well I had a chat with a man called Carl in a small village called Hadnell [to the north of shrewsbury] yesterday who immediatly seemed to know what was causing the problem,I bought the part from him, £80 he had one on shelf and fitted it this morning,the engine is now fine.It was the part Screwloose referred to,thankyou for the help and advice,ATB wrock
