A neighbour has an escort diesel 1.8 75 bhp turbo,it is losing power now and again when driving and when at tickover it occasionly has alumpy tickover as if a plug is misfiring on a petrol engine),any advice welcome thanks wrock

It sounds as if it's drawing a little air into the fuel. It could be almost anywhere; but the aneroid unit on the front of the injection pump is the first place I'd look. The internal diaphragms split.

If it's that, they usually drop a cylinder [and blue smoke] about 20 seconds after coming to idle. A piece of clear tubing inserted into the drain-back line will show if there's air getting in. There should only be clear diesel returning to the tank.

change the fuel filter first and see if that helps ,even if it has been recently changed a little bit of water can make it hard to get fuel through and make it draw air elsewhere

well I had a chat with a man called Carl in a small village called Hadnell [to the north of shrewsbury] yesterday who immediatly seemed to know what was causing the problem,I bought the part from him, £80 he had one on shelf and fitted it this morning,the engine is now fine.It was the part Screwloose referred to,thankyou for the help and advice,ATB wrock
