Naff cars - quizman

Having just had 3 bottles of Warsteiner and sharing a bottle of Nuits-St-Georges with my wife, a fathers day present, it is the 37th aniversary of the first time I got to know her well, if you know what I mean!
We went out in my father's Vauxhall Victor estate, my Cortina 1600E was in for repairs. Has anyone ever gone out for a first thingy in such a awful naff car?

Very practical, I would have thought. Mine was.
Mind you, three bottles of Warsteiner and half a bottle of Nuits St Georges is really living it up.
What do you drive now, a Mondeo TDCI?

No certainly not, it's a Passat 130 TDCI. It costs less than the wife, but I think I would sooner have her.

I forgot to say it was a 1966 model, the car that is, FFA70D.

"Thingy", with your girlfriend in her fathers car?

I say, that's jolly poor form, old man.

Austin Cambridge Estate - the folks had one in a sort of pale blue. Got I hated it, especially when they picked me up from school in it.

Took a girl out on a first date in a pale green metallic Capri - think the battery was shot - I have a vision of her trying to push start it (she didn't drive) as I sat in it.....

Hmm mine was an Austin A30. It had an MOT altho the sills were more filler and rust than steel. But in its defence it was in a fetching shade of BRG.

Nafness personified: 803cc, 30bhp and 60mph was top speed with a following hurricane...

Oh and the engine mounting rubbers were shot so when you reversed it shook all over the place. I practised parking forwards in onto pavements to avoid reversing:-)

I remember picking up my mkII Austin Healey Sprite, my joy uncontained at this piece of automotive heaven in a stunning red too, and running round to pick up Sue. I escorted her into the car, pushed the starter button, it was a proper one with 948cc engine and semi-elliptic rear springs as well, and snick snacked through the gears. I turned to her and asked her what she thought of it, in a Joe Cool, casual kind of way, to which she replied "its quite draughty isn't it". I never did get to know her well despite the fact that her father farmed a large chunk of East Anglia. I bet she regretted missing out especially when I then got an MGB roadster, that taught her!

Confession time - I had a Maxi Highline (twin carb) when single, before I met SWMBO, and, yes, I took her for our first date in it. I'vr had hatchbacks or estates ever since and we're still together....

It was my second new car, after an MG 1300 when I kept finding too small for the surprising amout of things one needed a hatchback for - not, however, what was being implied above!!

I can remember the shortlist: it was a twin-carb Maxi v. Triumph Dolomite (new on the market and unreliable) v. MGBGT (cost too much to insure although very little faster than the Maxi HL up to 70 mph). The sheer usefulness of the Maxi won. I had two, both very reliable. But the design faults were never cured so seven Renaults followed.

I think the Maxi seats folded down into a bed, this appealed to me but the rest of the car did not.

The first thingy, this was before my wife, was in a Mini (BRE478A). There was not much room, but where there is a will there is a way.

The Victor was my father's car, a horrible wallowing thing which nearly turned over in corners.

Lovely old days!!!

"I forgot to say it was a 1966 model, the car that is, FFA70D."

FFA came from Burton-on-Trent. Glad to see from your original post that alcohol still flows freely in your veins!

The 1600E was a nice car, though, and as you're still together no doubt she knew the difference between 1600E and 1600L.

"FFA 70D. FFA came from Burton-on-Trent.

Where did the 70 D come from????????? ;-)

This thread reminds me of a certain Triumph Herald convertible. Needed young, flexible limbs and a lot of youthful enthusiasm - all of which are well past me now!!

>>The 1600E was a nice car,

The 1600E was my favorite car ever (XVT816H), it was having a new gearbox when I went out in my dad's Victor. I don't blaim the car for this, I was a mad driver when young.
The seat reclining mechanism was great for courting purposes, left arm around the girl and right hand on the recline lever, pull and girl is in a horizontal position.
I used to love coming up against MGB's at traffic lights, they would get off first but with the close ratio box on the 1600E I would be at the next lights first. There was not much room in a MGB either!!

I had a 1978 rally prepped manta,complete with rollcage,bucket seats and harnesses...not very erm..comfy,if you know what I mean...next car was a VW passat GL5 estate,which resulted in kid No:2.........

The old V V estate was nearly my first car,a friend of my father was selling one.Common sense prevailed and I got a 1966 Anglia 1200 instead.Did get a Victor saloon once, the later model, like a small American car,and it drove like one too.Luckily someone ran into it and I got the insurance money. As for the subject,G Fs Daf 33.

I feel for the modern youth, I remember quite vividly courting Mrs S in my bench seated Ford Prefect.

Modern cars seem to have so much infrastructure between the front seats and to invite any prospective conquests into the back seat *should* elicit a refusal....

Hilman Hunter GL 1725 Auto, with Wolfrace alloys that were so porous I would have to pump up the tyres every other day. This sleek motor had a Webasto sunroof so that we could watch the stars as I whispered sweet nothings in here ear, but a very wide centre console making it very difficult to get one's leg over!

Well, my mate Syd had a Vauxhall Viva van, the HA model, you know, square, boxy and rusty. Now he wanted to go out with the nice looking one so she travelled in the passenger seat and I shared the back of the van with the slightly obese one. She was called Faith but I never did follow the advice of the song (" You gotta have faith.....") . Never did like that van!
