colour changing paintwork - billy25
Hi folks,
just seen a "fresh" car in town today, looks like it may be a chrimbo pressie for a baseball cap, however, it has the most unusual and eye-catching paintwork that i think i've seen. is it a "standard" paint used by Rover, or is it some-body's idea of customising?

the car is a "k" reg Rover 414, no other apparent mods, still steel wheels etc. but as you walk towards the car from the side it is "solid" green, when you have passed it and turn to look back at it, it is "solid" purple!. i even tried to reverse course to check it wasn't painted different on both sides, but as i walked towards it again, the purple side turned green!. and the other side was now purple. Doh! i give up, is it greeny-blue on the v5?

cheers
billy.

When I was a kid, my friends big sisters boyfriend had a murano pearl escort that did that sort of thing - cool or what ! (at 12 years oldanyway)

From what I remember it was an option but I've only ever seen it on the Rover Coupe.

Nissan had a 'chromaflair' type paint which was a similar green/purple, but it is very expensive and makes bodywork repairs a nightmare !

Not Rover Amerthe Pearlescent paint by any chance? K reg is a bit early for it though.

A friend has this colour(s) on a P reg 214. Try getting a good match if it gets scratched!

First time I saw it on a P reg 100 I was pretty amazed that a company like Rover had the balls to paint a car in it.

Polychromatic paints have been around for a few years. Must be a nightmare in the repair shop though (complete body respray?).

Alfa used it on some 156's,plenty of respray shops wil do this for you if you wanted it.

Nissan did a special edition Primera in it, Green to Purple. One of the Kent Kit Car club had a Royale sprayed in it. Several remarked they liked it & were interested in having it done. It apparently had used 4 litres of paint at £350 per litre not including the base & lacquer coats, lots of coughing & muttered comments of maybe a normal colour will do!
PS Amaranthe is a Purple/Blue colour, used by Rover.

Is this the kind of thing?

Living near the Nissan factory the chromatic paint is a reasonably common sight, I think some of it must either go missing *cough* from the factory or the staff must get a good deal on buying it as you tend to see the Nissan colour on a fair few different cars round these parts and they're certainly not all Nissans.

It's getting a bit rarer of late, but I suspect that's 'cos the colour isn't offered new anymore...

The 'down with it' kids call this a 'flip' paint job.

Today, saw same car parked outside supermarket, so decided i would wait and
try to have a chat with the owner.
Yep, definitley a baseball cap! who seemed very suspicious about my interest in his car,
and didn't want to hang around and discuss paintwork, so i was told in
not the quite Queens English!.
Now me wonders if he bought it for a particular reason:

"car 64, keep a look-out for a green '92 rover 414 heading west"
plod 1 :"is this it coming now"
plod 2: " No, this ones Purple, hurry up an choose your chinese!"

Andy p:
thats the type of thing!
looking more closely at the car, it also seems to have mettallic in it
also, really wouldn't want to scratch it! i would think you would have
to completely re-spray whole car, as i think even a completely
re-sprayed panel would stick out like a sore thumb.

cheers Billy.

My last Rover 45 Impression had a similar finish called Odyssey Blue pearlescent. If you walked around the car in sunlight the colour changed from the blue to a turquoise. Looked absolutely lovely especially after a clean and polish. It was the the missus who chose it rather than the boring Silver metallic one available for the same price.
