306 TD somethings gone bang! - Simon
I own a Peugeot 306 Meridian TD, which is just over 2 years old. Yesterday I accelerated (quite hard), I heard a sort of bang like a muffeled back fire. I lost some power a cloud of smoke came out the back. Pulled over had a quick visual check everything seemed still in place and running. Started up the engine again big cloud of white smoke, pulled into a side street, now with blue smoke coming from the exhaust but not in large quantites. Depress the accelerator and I get a big cloud of white smoke the engine ticks over fine. There where no signs of any problems before the bang eg noises and temp OK Does anybody have any suggestions please!

May sound daft, but has your car been needing the brake fluid topping up? Came across this years ago on a friend's Corsair. The car had a steady brake fluid loss, but no apparent leak. Ford dealer couldn't fix it, but we spotted that when you braked hard there was a rattle from the engine and a huge cloud of white smoke. We found the brake master cylinder was leaking fluid past the seals into the servo vacuum chamber, which was full up to the vacuum pipe conection. It usually disapeared steadily into the vacuum hose and went through the engine, but hard braking made a large quantity slop over, causing the noise and smoke.

Dont know what the arrangement is on a Peugot, but it's a possibility.

Simon,

John Slaughter's comments about the brake fluid/servo remind me that was the cause of a similar baffling problem I dealt with some years ago. But I think your diesel will have a separate vacuum pump meaning there is no connection between the inlet manifold and brake system.
A friend had a very similar set of symptoms on an Escort diesel a while ago so he pulled into a garage. They said it looks like the timing has slipped, didn't really want the job so advised him to slowly drive the ten miles home. Halfway the timing belt failed completely (it must have jumped a few teeth previously) with the end result being a £700 engine rebuild.
So take great care with your car and get it checked out!

hhhhmmm
This one sounds expensive
If you have lost power and the engine is still running smoothly, i think you could have a turbocharger fault.
If it was a head gasket failure i think you would have needed to top up the expansion tank before (ie you would have known that something wasn't quite right)
Suggest you do a compression test firstly and then take the boost hoses off and see if there is loads of engine oil in and around them internally. If so, then suspect the turbo, but don't be too hasty.

David,
With reference to your slipped cam belt diagnosis. I'm a mechanic at a truck and van hire company. Mainly Ford / Iveco vehicles. We have a few Iveco Daily vans. One of the many problems with these vans is a slipped cam belt. It happens if the engine is stalled (usually when on full lock) or when someone tries to tow start the van. It's always the fuel pump that's a tooth out. Nothing's damaged, but the engine won't start. This might not be relevent to a Peugeot 306 but might be of interest.

Spot on - that will teach me to read the model designation more carefully! As you say a vacuum pump rather than a servo on a diesel.

My guess is that if it's still smoking badly then it's the turbo. I assume it is smoke, not steam, as steam would indicate blown head gasket or cracked head. Not good news either way.

The slipped belt is an interesting option - with diesels poor combustion gives a grey smoke - I've seen this on a Citroen which started on only one or two glow plugs, and smoked like mad for a couple of minutes. I imagine a slipped belt and faulty pump timing would upset the combustion.

White smoke in a diesel normally indicates unburnt fuel coming through.

Guy's thanks for all your advice it is greatly appreciated.
The timing belt option I think is an unlikely one as the engine is still ticking over with no problem and was replaced 10K ago.
I am leaning towards the idea of the turbo giving up in some way, it ties up with the bang and sudden drop in power, but not total loss.
The white smoke out the back is almost certainly steam but how this would tie up with a turbo failure I don't know, are they water cooled??
I don't have the correct equipment to check this kind of thing out so it looks like I'll be calling out a diagnostics guy, I'll let you know the outcome.
