peugeot losing power - Phil Clarke
i own a 1987 Pug 205, and it often just loses power, or fails to gain more speed. It feels like the revs are just dropping away, (or not gaining when I put my foot down) I've spoken to my local garage, but they say without giving it a "good look over" they cannot help. Can anyone suggest something which I could try first.

Much Appreciated

Fuel evaporation in the carburrettor.

Phil,

You don't say which engine, petrol/diesel? This has a fair bearing on the situation.

HJ could be right but there are also many other fuel/ign faults that could cause this.

Your garage was quite fair in saying they neded to "have a good look", it's the only way to diagnose the problem with any certainty. With respect to HJ diagnosis of such a broad fault by e-mail is near impossible!

Find a good garage you trust and use them, it's what they are for!

Re: peugeot losing power - Adam Going (Tune-Up Ltd)
Phil,
If your car is petrol, my first step would be to replace the fuel filter and check fuel delivery & pressure. Secondly, make sure the air intake control system is OK (the flap should admit warm air when engine is cold) - if it has failed or the warm air intake from the manifold shield to the air filter intake is missing carburettor icing may occur due to permanant cold air supply. After that you probably do need a proper diagnostic check-up. See your local Yellow Pages under Car Engine Tuning.
If diesel, when were the air and fuel filters last changed ? Fuel system should also be checked for vacuum/air leaks, but this is probably again a job for a specialist.
Good luck, Adam.

Do remeber that it does not have to be "freezing" to suffer carburettor icing high humidity and below 15 degrees C it can happen.
