How do you turn an airbag off on a 97 Passat TDi,in order to fit a baby seat on the passenger side?

I know the some VW & Vauxhall stuff needs a special child seat from the main dealer with a transponder in that will turn the airbag off when the cars SRS system senses it is fitted, No idea if a 1997 Passat has this system though..

Best was forward is consult the owners handbook or ask a main dealer.

VW have now copied PSA Peugeot / Citroen ( who have been fitting these for about 8 years ) in fitting ignition key operated passenger airbag deactivation swithces.

The mk 5 Golf hire car I had the other week had the key switch in the glovebox to turn the passenger airbag off.

VW make quite a performance out of this: they're clearly paranoid about litigation. First you have to get the special form from your dealer and fill in all the requested info, which is then centrally registered against the car's VIN in their database.. Then they permit a named authorized person to access and update the airbag configuration, disconnect the passenger bag and fit a special resistor that they supply to the harness. Best left to the dealer - if they'll even do it.
